A/N hi :) the video is about using white canes and if recommend that you'd watch if you don't know much about blindness. It's so windy out side it sounds like there is a rollercoaster out there. ANYWAYS... here's an update :)
Zach decided that he was going to stop wearing his contact lenses. He was now legally blind, so the strongest prescription didn't do much for him anyways. The doctor had measured him up for a white cane at his first hospital appointment, so he could start using it when he pleased. He decided today was the day. It was a Tuesday, and although still bitterly cold, there was no longer a need for the school to be shut down, meaning that this was Zachs' first day.
His mother had dropped him off, but informed him that he'd have to make his own way home, as both parents would be at work. Taking a deep breath, he stepped out of the car, dropping his came and letting it snap into place before walking into the unfamiliar building. He was not excited.
Locating the desk, he cautiously walked over, stopping when he felt the tap of his came against the base of it. He saw the blurry outline of the receptionist who was greeting him. "Hello dear, I haven't seen you around before. Are you the new kid?" Zach nodded. "Zach, is it? I have another student to help you around, his name is Corbyn. He should be here any minute now,"
Suddenly an out of breath boy, bounded through the door, arriving at the desk with haste. "Sorry I'm late," he panted, trying to catch his breath.
The receptionist just tutted, before intrigue the two boys to each other. They had the same lessons, which is why they were paired. "So Zach, are you excited to be starting a new school?" He asked as the receptionist walked off. Zach shook his head.
"No, I'd rather do online like I used to do." Zach replied. He was slightly shocked when Corbyn offered his elbow as to sighted guide him as most people offer their hand.
"why are you looking so surprised?" Corbyn asked, smiling at the boy.
"oh, it's just... How do you know how to sighted guide?"
"My dad runs a clinic for the blind," he shrugged, beginning to walk Zach to his locker, where he swiftly deposited his unneeded belongings before being guided to their first lesson.
There were a few other kids who were already there, but Zach couldn't see if he could recognise them.
Getting slightly panicked when he realised that he didn't recognise what lesson it was, he looked over to the sign, where he realised just how much he was going to struggle.
He tapped Corbyn on the shoulder, and whispered "is there braille on the sign?" Corbyn whispered a quick 'yes' as Sach reached his hand out to feel the dots.
"is it... English first?" Corbyn confirmed his question, making Sach smile when he realised that he interperated the sign correctly. He had been struggling with the language and was rather excited when he realised that what he read was correct.
A few seconds later, the door opened to reveal a woman who had brown hair. The students began to funnel into the class whilst the teacher talked to Zach.
"hello, you must be the new boy. I've sat you at the front with Corbyn so it will be a little bit easier for you." she explained, showing him to his seat. He took it, as someone sat down next to Corbyn.
"hey Corbyn, yours tonight after school, right?" Zach could see he had a big mop on top of his head that resembled a likeness to an afro.
"Yeah, like always." He waved his hand dismissively before turning to face Zach. "do you wanna come a well?" Corbyn asked his new friend.
