untitled [short passage]

The forest was alight with fireflies, fluttering around aimlessly. A girl stood amongst them, but she had too much on her mind to properly admire their beauty. The glowing creatures buzzed around her, dashing in and out of her eyeline. She closed her eyes.

She remained in this position for several minutes - standing dead still in the middle of the forest, lit only by the mystical fireflies. She did not flinch. Not even when a snarling wolf prowled towards her.

Its nose twitched as it took in her unearthly scent. It seemed not even a lowly wolf could stand it.

The girl still did not move.

Fireflies scattered in its path as the wild beast circled around her, yet she still did not move.

A noise deep in the dark, in the woods attracted its attention, and - with one last feral look at the girl - it darted away, howling into the night.

"That was close, mea parvulus."

Only now did the girl move. She slowly opened her eyes and turned to face her... mentor. "I know."

A firefly fluttered in front of his wrinkled face, its light reflecting off of his thin, round glasses. He reached up and crushed it between his bony fingers, letting its crumpled, lifeless body fall to the floor.

The girl pushed back her shoulders and stood up straighter but she could not look him in the eyes.

The mentor raised his white eyebrows and trudged back to the cabin. She could only watch him go.
