The cemetery was silent, except for my whimpers.
"Step down, Rhi."
My nickname sounded odd coming out of his mouth, unnatural. The pinching wind swirled around in the cold night air. I felt goosebumps prickle on the back of my neck.
"Step down," He repeated.
I didn't budge. Strong defiance, maybe. More likely fear. I always froze in moments of fight or flight. Like most aspects of life, I didn't fit into either category. Neither this nor that, neither here nor there.
I had strange reactions to things most people didn't have strange reactions to, my mother loved to say. When Mac skipped up to me, his sweet toddler eyes shining, and asked to play, I ignored him. Too annoying, I would think to myself as I pushed him away. God, would I give anything to play with him now.
"One more time." Something in his eyes told me he was serious. Something told me that I really would have one more chance to do what he said.
But it also could have been the dead body below me.
"Rhi, I'm not--"
"I'm going, I'm going!" I interrupted through tears.
I shouldn't have yelled. The corpse on the ground made it clear that his temper was anything but short. I looked around. At the graveyard, at the dark woods surrounding it.
Twelve-year-old me would have thought this was so cheesy, so corny, I would say. But now no one was coming for me. This was real. I had no choice. Slowly, I stepped into the hole in the ground, one foot at a time. An empty pit, crudely dug. The soil crunched beneath my cheap shoes.
Buried alive. He's going to bury me alive. I knew he wasn't, but I couldn't be blamed. I was being forced into a dug-up grave, after all.
I lied down next to the dead woman's body. She looked so cold I wanted to give her my jacket. I thought at this moment that I might look like her, lying in her grave. Frozen, dead, moldy.
And that's when he jammed the shovel into my face.

The video above is the song 'Rhiannon' by Fleetwood Mac. I named my main character after the song, and it really captures the mood of the story so far.
