As soon as I entered my bedroom, I could tell that something was wrong.

Scarlett sat on her bed, her arms crossed, glaring at me. She was tapping her foot. Even though I could tell she was angry, my mind compared her to parents in movies. How they sat in the living room, waiting for their kid to come home from some party.

"Hey," I said, crossing to my bed. She stepped in front of me, blocking my path. I never realized she was so tall, but that may have been because she had never been mad at me like this.

"Don't hey me," She said, aggressively. I side stepped her, much to her annoyance.

She turned on me again. "Where the hell were you, Rhi?" I didn't understand why she would be so mad at me for sneaking out.

"I never knew you were such a rule follower, Scar." I regretted speaking as irritatedly as she was. I would only escalate the tension.

She held up something in front of my face. It was small and bright. It was a tranquilizer dart. I attempted to snatch it out of her hand, but she pulled it high above her head. God, she was tall.

"How did you get that?" I asked.

"No." She countered. "More like how did you get that?" I didn't want to tell her. Yes, she was technically my friend, but ever since we started sharing a room, it didn't feel like that. Our relationship had been tense and stiff, and I wouldn't have been surprised if neither of us trusted each other anymore. This whole dart debacle wasn't helping.

"Fine," Her tone veiled a layer of rage. "Since you won't tell me, I'll come to my own conclusions."

I didn't know why, but this was scaring me. She barely knew anything at all, and still she knew too much.

She continued, her voice eerily calm. "You decided that you needed this dart. I don't know why, maybe cause you've been going crazy the past couple days. Who knows where you got it? Maybe you stole it from a guard. Maybe you took it from....... Allegra."

She observed my face, how I flinched when she said Allegra's name. "That's it, isn't it." She almost laughed. "You stole this dart from Allegra for some unknown reason. Or maybe it isn't some unknown reason."

I felt my heart beat. She was getting close to uncovering my secrets.

"You slipped this into my drink last night. You made me fall asleep. Why? Because you're a slut who wanted to visit her little boyfriend." Her eyes were cruel. Right now, at this moment, she reminded me more of Beck than anyone I would ever be friends with.

"Go to hell, Scarlett." While her guard was down, I snatched the dart out of her hands. "You're a bitch." She was too flustered to say anything, and too flustered to chase after me when I opened the window above her bed and tossed the dart out.

"Now you have no proof." I didn't want to act like this, but she was dangerous. She was too risky and could compromise my goal of escaping and rescuing my sisters.

She charged into the bathroom and slammed the doors.

"You don't have time to take another long shower!" I taunted. I immediately regretted yelling at her. I didn't blame her for being mad. I would probably be mad too if someone had poisoned my drink with liquid from a tranquilizer dart. Maybe she had gotten sick from it, and it was my fault. I supposed what I was actually mad about was her calling me a slut. Even though she didn't know that Dane and I had slept together, I felt like our secret was out. I felt dirty, and Scarlett was to blame.

Nevertheless, I began to apologize. I couldn't lose my only friend at the academy. "Listen, Scar--"

She pulled the door open with anger and interrupted my sentence. "We're not friends anymore, if you couldn't tell." She slammed the door closed again. If only she had heard my apology, I thought, but soon realized that those words would have gone in vain. If someone wasn't meant to be friends, they wouldn't be friends. I survived 17 years without a friend, what was another semester?
