I decided to skip breakfast the next morning. I couldn't face being in that room, hundreds of kids judging me. To be fair, if I didn't have the whole story, I would probably be judging myself too.
I sat in my room and waited until the breakfast bell sounded, signaling the end of the meal. Because there was a ten-minute passing period from breakfast to aiming class, I sat on my bed for 3 minutes after the bell rang. That would give me enough time to run down, grab a bagel and cream cheese, and make It to class right on time so I wouldn't have to talk to anyone.
I threw my book on my bed and headed out of the room. With all of the time I had spent in my dorm room, I had already finished Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire. It had only been six days since I first got here. That was my new record for finishing the fourth Harry Potter and I suddenly realized why this school had the need for a full-sized library.
Only a few students looked at me with stares as I went into the cafeteria. I hurried when I saw that the lunch ladies were already clearing the trays of food.
"Wait!" I called to a particularly short woman. She looked at me expectantly, her hands full with food. Her face told me, 'I have work to do, and you're not part of it.'
"Can I get a bagel?" My eyes widened desperately. I wasn't sure if the puppy dog eyes tactic still worked on adults, but it was worth a shot. Reluctantly, the woman held out a bagel. I looked down in disappointment. It was wheat flavored.
"Do you happen to carry any plain bagels?" I offered sheepishly. She rolled her eyes and walked back into the kitchen, bagels in tow. Ugh. I only had 6 minutes before class started and I didn't have anything to eat. Before I was taken to the academy, whenever I didn't eat anything for breakfast, my stomach would moan and growl during class, causing stares and laughs. I guess I would have to go, hungry.
"Rhiannon," A voice called out. I was shocked to see who it belonged to. Beck sat across the cafeteria, at a table. He had a full plate of food in front of him, and judging off the quantity of it, he was still in the middle of it. I hesitated, not sure if he actually meant to call me. Maybe he was thinking to himself and happened to say his thoughts aloud, like I did with Dane.
Then I remembered, I was the only person at this school named Rhiannon, and probably one of very few in the world. I waved to him, not sure how to respond. From what I knew about him, he wasn't exactly the most warm and friendly person in the world, and him calling at me like this so nicely, especially after I attacked him and his girlfriend, in that order, made me even more surprised.
I walked over to him, the hunger in my stomach now replaced with butterflies. I sat down and made eye contact with him, that toned face of his containing an amused smile.
"Yes?" I questioned him. I still needed to act tough around him, mainly defensively. I wondered if I would ever be able to act normally around the boy who killed my family and kidnapped me.
He finished chewing and swallowed his food, taking his sweet time. I rolled my eyes and looked at the clock. Only five minutes til my next class, and it would take at least a minute to jog down to the basement. After all, I didn't want to break rule one and add a third strike to my already waning list.
"Listen," I started, before he interrupted.
"I heard what you did," He said, coolly taking a sip of orange juice. "To Madison."
Oh great. Now he was mad at me, too? "I didn't--"
He interrupted again. "I know you didn't fight her. She told me that she ripped her own hair out, knowing that you would slap her. Pretty smart of her."
