We woke up the next morning 2 hours early.
Scarlett and I had talked the night before. She had understood that she was being unreasonable, and I agreed that I had overreacted. We were less than a year away from becoming adults, so we figured we had should at least act like it.
She had kindly proposed that I take first showers, since she took longer showers than I did, and my bed was smaller. I smiled. No need to confirm. We had become friends again. I didn't know how this whole 'friend' thing usually worked, so we may not have stopped being friends in the first place. All I knew was that now, things could be back to normal. When Madison tried to split Dane and us up, it may have worked for a little bit, but we eventually came together again. When things were meant to be, they would be.
We gossiped a little that morning about how Alicia, in the grade above us, and Michael, in our grade had been seen playing footsie's in the cafeteria. After all, romantic relationships were banned in the academy. Of course, neither of us acknowledged the fact that me and Dane's relationship had been getting hotter and heavier as of late.
I only wished for it to get even hotter, even heavier, but of course, patience.
We headed down when the breakfast bell rang.
I shuddered when we passed the landing of the 3 floor stairs.
I hadn't told Scarlett about last night, about how when I was coming upstairs from the library, I saw someone in the shadows, just staring at me. Obviously, I hadn't seen their face, but the sense I got from their presence was enough to make me lose sleep for days.
I decided not to tell her about the occurrence. She was sharing a room with me, and the idea that someone was targeting me, her roommate, would only freak her out; and I wouldn't blame her for it.
We pushed into the cafeteria. It wasn't as crowded as usual; I assumed many students, with their new roommates, had decided to stay up late last night, and were sleeping in past breakfast.
We sat down at our usual table, but one of our usual members was not there; usually, Dane was sitting right there, nearest to the buffet line, with a chipper smile on his face. Today was not the case. I looked around before I sat down, concerned. Not quite for him, just the fact that he wasn't here with us.
Scarlett gave me a look, one that said, 'are you going to sit down?' I did sit, but I was distracted. I wasn't sure that I liked who I had become. A crazy, boy obsessed girl who was constantly looking for a sign of the boy she kissed once. I felt guilty, for some odd reason.
When I turned my head forward, I saw a possible reason I felt like this. Beck was staring at me, in a horrible way. Something was so twisted about everything he did, every look he gave, every movement of his hand. It's almost as though him looking at me was enough to make me feel terrible.
I averted my eyes. I'd seen the wrong boy.
That's when I saw Dane.
But he wasn't being normal. He was standing outside of the door, looking straight at me. His eyes were small, his stance covert. He was hiding something.
I gave him a worried look. Something about his energy was unnerving me. I wondered if his mood had to do anything with my phone. Maybe he had gotten caught stealing. Maybe my phone had already been destroyed.
He gestured for me to come outside and talk to him.
"One second," I said to Scarlett. "I have to go to the bathroom." She looked at me oddly. She could probably tell that I was lying. Even though she had known me for a little over a week, she was intelligent and caught on quickly.
