Chapter 14
A Story Wrapped Up

Adam was furious with my action. He couldn't wipe off the blood without letting me loose first, and I knew that he knew it'd give me an upper hand.
He cackled darkly, tightening his grip. "You think you're such a solid person? An emotionless tank?"
I continued to glare, not stopping the eye contact.

"Well, I'll tell you something that will just make you insane."
He threw me onto the hot asphalt, the back of my head screaming in pain.
Adam straightened up his back, and revealed the knife again. "See this? I've killed a lot of people with it." He flipped it around. "Men, women, children. I don't discriminate. But, then again..."

The palms of my hands pushed up against the ground, my muscles aching. I glanced over to Tyler, who was just staring in disbelief.

"There was only one woman I killed with this handy-dandy knife of mine. Right under the ribs." He made a stabbing motion. My breath faltered, hoping he wasn't going to say what I thought he would.
"And this certain woman, I still regret the fact I didn't see her die. But, you did."

Every muscle in my body tensed up. "You... you..."

"Can't quite get the words out? Let me help you." Adam leaned towards me. "Yes. I killed mom."

The knife he was holding was barely an inch from my torso. "And guess who left Dad to die on that road?" He spat.
"I did. With this same dagger." Adam began pushing the blade against my skin.

There was a sudden commotion from behind Adam that caused everybody to look over in wonder. Walkers?

Three familiar faces had waltzed through the blockage, threatening the Purifiers with their guns.

"David!" I yelled, taking this chance to try and get away.
Adam noticed a second too early, though, and slashed my cheek open absentmindedly.
Ignoring the newfound pain, I kicked my right leg upwards towards his junk. Adam recoiled onto the ground, and I jumped up.

Tyler took his chance and grabbed Envy's gun, pushing her backwards and butting Marcel in the nose.
Lui made his way over to me, shooting a couple of loose Purifiers in the way.

He held out his hand to me. "We need to go, now."
Without protest, I let him help me up. Tyler jogged over with concern written on his face.

Adam was still on the ground, groaning in pain. I was about to pull out my Huntsman when both Envy and Marcel blocked my way, recovered. "Touch him, and you'll be six feet under." She threatened.

Tyler grabbed my left wrist and began pulling me towards where David, Lui, and Jon escaped.
And only when we were driving away in David's off-roader is when I was finally able to register the pain I had. My cheek stung, my jaw was sore, and I could still taste blood in my mouth.

But I came out okay. And so did Tyler.

David and Lui sat in the front two seats, David driving. Tyler and I were in the backseat, while Jon was looking out behind us.

"How," Tyler began, grabbing everybody's attention. "How did you guys find us?"
I decided to speak up. "And why'd you help us?" My throat was dry and hoarse.

David's shoulders relaxed against the seat, and he let out an audible sigh. "We found you guys through Brian. We overheard him talking to someone on a walkie talkie, and got a vague idea." He answered.

"And we helped because we found out, after you two escaped, that Brian wasn't who he said he was." Lui interjected. "We heard him. Talking about you, Evan. To your brother."

My chest tightened. "Wait, that means-"

"That Brian was working with them." Tyler cut me off, disbelief in his voice. "So he killed Kelly and everybody else?"
I glanced over at him. "The group you guys were allied with?"

He nodded. "That bastard." I could tell he was fuming.

"What about Brock, and-and everybody else?" I asked, wondering if they were also liars and backstabbers.
Thankfully, David shook his head. "They were the ones that got us this car and weapons. Shortly after, they ran off in the other direction."

Silence ensued. Jon stayed quiet the whole time, just sitting on the back seat. Tyler still looked very angry; and for good reason. David had a betrayed expression on his face. Lui just stared into the woods as we continued driving.
And I couldn't feel anything. Even though I felt angry, sad, tired, and literally every other emotion, I couldn't find a way to express it. Find the drive to act on those emotions.

My mom was stabbed by Adam. My dad was left incapacitated on the street and left to be eaten by Adam.
I was almost killed, myself. And yet, it was like I shutdown.
My thoughts were scrambled, and I couldn't find any reason to get up again.

My eyes drifted to the huntsman that was clasped in its holder, attached to the belt loop on my jeans.

And that's when I vowed to kill my brother.
