We've been walking for exactly 2 hours and I've already eaten all of my granola bars. I've gotta say I'm quite proud of myself that I've made it this far.
"Caleb, stop walking near the cliff. You're going to slip and fall down!" Thomas' panicked voice rang all throughout the mountain, some of the people in front of us looked at Thomas briefly.
Thomas' cheeks reddened and he gave a shy smile. I snickered quietly.
"Seriously Caleb, don't listen to him." I said giving him an encouraging smile. he looked at me, his head tilted to his right. "Whyyy?"
"Think about it, if you fall then there's going to be a helicopter pulling you out of there and we'd all get to ride it, so that we could stop kidding ourselves with this hiking nonsense." I said over-enthusiastically like I was telling a fairy tale to a seven year old.
I looked at him for a second and he stopped walking, his forehead started to crease as he processed what I just said.
"You're mean." He said, proceeding to walk again, consciously walking far from the edge of the cliff. I smiled to myself.
Thomas nudges my shoulder. "Thanks for that, I don't know how to keep all of you alive." he said in his fatherly tone voice.
I gave him a confused look. "What do you mean? I really wanted to ride a helicopter." I said smiling a bit.
He laughs and shakes his head.
"Whatever you say, nice guy." I scowled at him and slump my shoulders.
"Is it just me or this is going on forever?" Jeff groaned from behind us.
He's still carrying the heavy bags from earlier and I am impressed by his strength, two hours of walking up a hill with heavy bags on you is pretty tiring.
"Just a few more minutes Jeff." Corey said walking as if this whole ordeal isn't tiring at all. "I think we're supposed to have a little break." He shouted behind him so we could hear.
I heard Jeff let out a tired and silent "Oh. Thank God!" and I chuckled once again.

Corey was right. A few minutes after he said it, the tour guide shouted that we're going to have a little break so we could eat and rest.
I slumped on the grass and started munching on a sandwich that Corey prepared for all of us. One by one all of them slumped beside me too.
For a minute we were all silent, appreciating the delicious sandwich in front of us. Then Jeff let out a loud and very stinky burp. "Ugh! Jeff seriously! Stop being so gross all the time." Thomas said while trying to fan away the odor out of his nose.
Corey's hand was covering his nose and Caleb hides under his over-sized jacket. I smiled at them, not even caring about Jeff's stinky burp.
I didn't think that I could love hiking, but right now laughing with my friends, eating a cold sandwich and feeling the breeze on the wind nipping at my neck, I couldn't ask for a better hitch day.
Corey was right this is therapeutic as shit. But I'm not gonna tell him that.
"What are you secretly smiling about, Noah?" Corey asked, lifting one of his eyebrows.
All of them suddenly turns to me. I shrugged smiling widely. " I just realized how happy I'm going to be after high school, no more 'Jeff the stinker'." I said quoting Thomas' words from sophomore year, when Jeff released a particularly gnarly burp at a coffee shop.
Jeff tossed some rolled-up paper towel at me and I grinned at him. Thomas immediately picks up the trash. What a dad!
"I think you're smiling because you just realized how great we all are." Corey intervened, smiling from ear to ear. Actually all of them are smiling from ear to ear. Oh God! They're teasing me.
I rolled my eyes at them. "Whatever, I need to pee." I said suddenly standing up and grabbing my backpack. " I think someone's getting sentimental." Jeff said in a sing-song voice. I answered them with a raised finger while I was walking away. I could hear their cackle from behind me.
