The Sound of thunder filled his ears once again. Friedrich quickly sat up in his bed, the worn steel springs squealing at the sudden shift of weight. He wiped his hand down his face; it glistened with sweat.
Four more roaring knocks demanded his attention.
"Einen Moment!"
Friedrich pleaded in return, snatching yesterday's white button up shirt that he had draped over the wooden bedpost. Putting his arms through the sleeves, he scooped up the grey trousers from the floor and stepped into them. Friedrich walked down the hall as he fastened the buttons to his pants, leaving his shirt open. The floor boards creaked and popped as his bare feet carried him to the front door.
Drawing closer to the door, Friedrich could hear the muffled voices of two men speaking in German. He saw the the dark silhouettes of four men, but the textured glass windows on the door concealed their identities. An abrupt rain of glass showered the floor, causing Friedrich to freeze where he stood.
