"Take her upstairs and wait for me. I'll clean this up; no girl deserves to see all of this blood." Friedrich spoke under his breath so that the girl might not hear.
"She has seen far worse than this." Alexis responded, taking the girl by the hand and leading her up the wooden stairs.
Friedrich did as he said he would and disposed of the bodies, wrapping them in a tablecloth and burying them behind the house. After that task was done, Friedrich closed the front door, found what nails and spare wood he could, and boarded up the windows on it. He then filled a bucket with water from the kitchen sink, grabbed a mop, and washed the pools of blood away.
Exhausted, Friedrich marched up the creaky stairs. A woman and girl sitting on the white linen sheets of a bed peaked the horizon as he came to the top of the stairs.
Friedrich stopped for a moment in the doorway of the room. Her hair. Long strands of auburn caught the morning light that flooded through the only window in the room, causing the edges of her hair to gleam like rubies before cooling back to the deep red that was her natural hair color. Her light blue eyes, framed by her full eyelashes, were focused on her still blood stained hands she picked at.
His trance was broken when Alexis noticed him, "Friedrich.." She spoke, relieved as she rose from the bed and walked out onto the landing of the stairs with him.
She turned back to her sister who still sat quietly on the bed. "Stay here. He and I need to speak in private for a moment." Alexis said in an almost maternal tone as she pulled the door shut.
