"okay, so you gotta cover it with your tongue-"

"how!!?"

"pretend the gum is like a blanket, like- like- here watch me," tyler attempts to open his mouth and show josh how to blow a bubble at the same time. he is unsuccessful. josh giggles at his attempt, he is sat on his belly, in the grass, while tyler is cross crossed with his legs.

"it's harddddd! i can't see what you're doinggg!!"

"shh, baby boy, just uh- keep practising okay?" his nicknames are becoming more frequent. he stands up.

"where are you going?" the happy boys eyes change to concern; sadness.

"i have to go, joshie."

josh stands up, dusts off his knees and hugs the other boy. "i'll miss you."

"i'll be back again this time tomorrow."

**********

the brick walls of the high school haunt him, torture him, and hold him captive. he looks up at them, asking them for help when rob and his friends come over.

"you always look at the ceiling when we come over joseph, how come?" his smirk is gruesome, mocking.

when tyler says nothing, the boy seems to grow more angry. "not talkin, hm?"

he looks at the corner of his eyes and sees a pair of fists.

he sees his red blood and weak fists slam onto the floor. he closes his eyes.

*********

he wakes up an hour later, in the nurses office of the school. it was after school hours, but in a state like that, mrs. k, the nurse, decided it was okay to help him.

"what the fu-"

"cool it, joseph," the nurse says. she wraps up his wounds and gives a sad smile. "what happened this time?"

"homophobes," he slurs his speech, half-asleep and weary.

"oh my god- josh!!! i have to go- uh thank you!"

"you take it easy, tyler joseph!"

said boy runs, runs, runs. so fast, so very fast. his heart almost cant take it. he's never been late to seeing josh, ever.

his heart yurns for the boy. he doesn't ever want to see his sad face again.

the sun is almost gone, but the lights of josh's white house are alive and he hears singing.

it's slow, waltzy even. it's old, too old to know what it is. but it's a beautiful song. is josh singing it?

tyler leaps up to the door and runs straight upstairs where he heard singing.

even when he (kind of loudly, to the point it was obvious) opened josh's bedroom door, josh didn't stop singing.

his eyes open at the sound of the door creaking, but he doesn't stop singing.

tyler runs to embrace the boy before he can see tyler's bruised face, because he doesn't ever want josh to stop singing.

it's soft, not a loud singing. it's calm, not a raging river of hurt, but maybe a simple stream of emotions.

after the happy boy pulls away from the hug, he sees tyler's jacked up face. he doesn't stop singing.

his petal soft fingertips graze his cheek slowly, as not to hurt him. his eyebrows and eyes twist and jolt in concern.

he stops singing.
