The vultures could be seen within a short distance from the river banks to be feeding on human corpses. The vultures eyes appeared bright red, and they looked unusually sick, with some who's feathers had completely fallen off.
Mobutu broke the silence, "looks like your virus is proving toxic to animals Doc, the taste of human flesh marinated in virus contaminated blood seems to be disorienting these birds. I can also see that the virus has become waterborne."
Dr. Mbezi disappointed with this outrageous conclusion retorted "the children and women in this village are the ones who mostly fetch water by the streams and do laundry, the kids even have swimming as their past time whilst the men go hunting and farming, inspite of this there is no scientific evidence to draw any concerns how the virus is spreading except by physical bites........
Seargent Mbo interrupted, "but Doc from here it can be seen that the victims that are mangled by bites into their flesh are mostly adult males, if my suspicions are right an infection of this magnitude to take place we're talking about a disease similar to the way Bilharzia spreads; through skin exposed to virus contaminated water"
Dr Mbezi lit up with great fear in his eyes "You must be mad Mbo!!! that would spell the end of civilization if this virus is infectious to that degree as Bilharzia, maybe talk about them drinking portions of infected river water."
Seargent Bato also chipped in "but think about it Dr, these people are expected to boil their water before drinking as per community health guidelines. This leads to the only conclusion that once the virus is in contact with water it becomes extremely soluble yet still maintains it's potency to infect people. Remember those Zooms we just escaped upstream? They drowned but the virus must have dissipated into the water and headed downstream"
Dr Mbezi could only look like a defeated man with no more answers as he felt he had just engineered the downfall of civilization. He then said "We have no choice but to start working on an Antidote"
Mobutu and his two bodyguard soldiers responded at the same time in utter shock and surprise "What!!!! There's no antidote!!!!!!!!!!"
By this time Mbo who was driving the speed boat had just landed the boat on the river banks.Dr Mbezi begun to laugh hysterically.......he laughed until he begun to cry, "Men, now you know how screwed we are, and many thanks for feeding most of my research team to hippo's and Zooms. With 2 professionals on this case, we are even more screwed to create an Antidote in good time, it will take months, that's if we can even live to that long"
Dr Mbezi, his assistant Dr. Chilufya, Mobutu Seseko and his two bodyguards by the names of Seargent Mbo and Bato disembarked from the boat and headed to the nearest building, a makeshift hut.
Before they could enter the hut they saw a brick grain Silo 100 metres tall at a distance, and there at the entrance were two Zooms trying to enter the building. Mobutu said, I would rather be in that building than this hut that can be knocked down.
His soldiers agreed, and told them to remain at the hut as they sweep the area towards the Silo. They trotted over in military style, and with two shots at the Zooms, they fell down. Bato looked behind and waved to indicate the passage way is clear, he then turned forward only to see the zoom that was once on the ground pacing quickly towards him, he fired at it in quick succession but it still managed to pounce on him dropping saliva all over his face.
Mbo immediately responded by hitting this zoom with the butt of his gun at it's head, blood sprinkled all over but when it was all done the zoom was laying officially dead on the ground. The Silo door quickly opened and a hand was seen waving at them to enter through there.
By this time Mobutu, Dr Mbezi and his assistant we're trotting over in that order towards the Silo. Mobutu shouted out for Mbo to leave Bato if he was injured, but Bato retorted in anger that he's okay and no injuries had been inflicted on him, so he quickly jumped to his feet and also ran to the Silo.......
The Silo was north of them, and in the opening.........Zooms we're seen running from the West to cut them off from reaching the Silo it seems that the gunshots had alarmed them to head back to food crying to be eaten. It was then that the people at the door of the Silo shouted "Hurry up!!!!!!"
Dr Mbezi ran like a mad man, his assistant too, everyone ran to reach the door. The door was a mechanical and metallic one that needed to slide to one side to open or close. The entrance was 5 metres wide and the man Manning the gate had now reduced it to 1 metre. Through the door came the two soldiers, Mobutu, Dr Mbezi, when the assistant was about to run in he was dealt with a heavy push to his right side and throwing him off balance by this time the gate was now closed shut.
The People inside; frightened women, men and children inside could only hear someone running around and screaming outside as Zooms could be heard pushing and hitting each other growling to get to their new found food. Dr Mbezi, reached breaking point as he quickly went to the person Manning the gate and pushed him off balance, pressed the button to open the gate and was seen about to jump out, that's how Mbo tackled Dr Mbezi at the entrance, soon as they fell down Mbo was also pounced on by a zoom that had jumped inside and bit at his neck, the gate was seen again closing by the push of a button and fingers of Zooms were heard being crashed by the gate.
The man Manning the gate got a gun and fired it at the Zoom's head which was biting onto Mbo's neck, the creature fell dead on Mbo. This guy then aimed his gun at Mbo and shot him in the head.
By this time Dr Mbezi was getting up and shouting out "Why did you do that?!!" the man then turned hid gun at the Dr and was about to pull the trigger when Mobutu shouted out "don't!!!!!!" You kill him you kill our remaining hope to find a cure!!!"
"So you say" and the man lowered his weapon. Bato looking at Mobutu he uttered softly under his breath "Boss I don't feel good" As he was now seen vomiting blood and shivering.
Mobutu asked what's wrong? The man with the pistol said "your boy has been exposed to the venom of these things, it likely happened when the zoom fell on him outside." No sooner had he said this, a gunshot sound tore up the silence of the room, and the sound of a body falling to the ground with a 'thud' followed suit. When the smoking gun simmered down, seen was the face of the man holding the gun and Bato had a bullet wound to his head.
Mobutu sat down on the floor in disbelief. The man apologized and introduced himself, I am Prince Okovo of the Luuyi people. In utter fear Mobutu could be heard uttering "Oh crap".
The prince continued, "as you can see we were overrun by these creatures who were actually once our loved ones. I know who you are very well Mobutu. You are a man who has committed great treason, and to show your face in my village is all the sweeter."Enjoying the story?
