Chapter Six: Research?
"Sure, I have no objection to let you guys to research in my library." Tucker said as he readjusted his glasses.
We all grinned thankfully.
Well, that was easy!
"Although, if I show you what's up my sleeve, you have to show me what's up yours."
I stiffened at his words.
...What?
I don't know or trust this man. I'm not going to tell him my darkest secret!
I started feeling anxious and breathing unevenly. Ed must've noticed it because he took my hand in his from under the table and gave it a reassuring squeeze. It somewhat helped me calm down a little.
"I'll do it." He whispered so only Al and I could hear.
"Ed, wait--"
Alphonse and I looked at each other with wide eyes as he took off his red coat and his black leather jacket, exposing his black shirt and his shining automail arm.
This only reminded me that I had to start his arm someday. I wasn't really in a rush: this arm was perfectly functional and I didn't tell him my plans about the new one to keep it a surprise.
As long as he didn't get into a rough fight, he'd be fine. Besides, if I take the risk of underestimating him, Mr Tucker didn't really seem like a threat.
Physically at least.
Edward revealed the reason why he had prosthetic limbs and his brother was wearing an armour. It surprised me how calm and collected he was the whole time he was talking.
Mr. Tucker put a hand to his chin. "You became a state alchemist at just 12 years old? And you were skilled enough not only to attempt human transmutation but also to bond a soul to a suit of armour..."
There was that slight annoyance in his voice again.
...Or was it jealousy? I couldn't tell.
"What about you, young lady?"
The question caught me off guard. My throat was so dry I felt like I was swallowing a rock when I gulped nervously.
No... Nonono.. He can't force me to open up.
But if I don't, Ed and Al won't have access to his research...
Dammit!
I was so anxious and so focused on my thoughts that I was stunned when Edward suddenly said:
"She doesn't owe you anything."
I stared at him silently with wide eyes.
Huh?
"She doesn't need to open up to you. Our searches have nothing to do with her. So leave her out of it."
I hung my head low to hide the grateful smile that was tugging at my lips.
Thank you, Ed.
Tucker nodded silently, staring at the table without really seeing it.
He ceased and finally agreed to show us his research. We all got up and walked to a room.
When he opened the door I jumped at the weird sounds of clutching and screeching coming from inside. It sounded like weird bestial animals.
We walked into the poorly lit room to see for ourselves what was the cause of those weird sounds. The noises came from small cages on the ground in a corner with mixes of different varieties of animals inside, all uglier than the other.
