I'm starting to get used to the squad. Everyone is so nice and friendly, but I still prefer to hang around William (who is still avoiding Yami). I enjoy his kind personality and his occasional cheekiness. Yami...well...he's not too bad. Sure, I accidentally opened the bathroom door while touring the base for the first time and he threatens to kill me, but I don't think he actually will. He turned out to be a great magic teacher. He trains me quite similar to Fuegoleon, including all the shouting."Dodge to the left! Right!"
"What kind of left is that?!"
"No! I meant left is right!"
"No! Left is right!"
"What is wrong with you?! Left is right! Right is wrong!"
"Luna yes!"
"Luna NO!"
"Imma kill you now!"
The conversation usually ends with Yami smashing the wall.
After I told people my magic contribute, Yami has been using it to his advantage, mostly to repair the base after he slams his fist onto it. I'll object that this will turn into a bad habit and if he becomes captain, his squad's base will be in real danger.
"Nonsense! I'll tell my squad to never ever break anything. Or I'll kill em!
Actually, when I become captain, you should join my squad, then you can repair the base if anyone was foolish to pound holes in it,"We were sitting by a pond after my magic training and Yami was discussing his plans for his squad.
"I think I'm happy enough in the Grey Deer. Wait, are you going to become captain of the Grey Deer? If so, I might switch another squad, let you run this place in the chaos that you make,"
"No way am I sticking around for this squad, filled with stuck up nobles and stuff. I think I'm going to go make my own squad, filled with all the interesting misfits in the kingdom,"
"Yup, sounds perfect. Decided on a name yet?"
Yami laughed in his loud obnoxious way. "I'm totally planning something that will take at least four more years to achieve and now we should already be thinking of a name for that squad. What do you think of Buff Black Brutes?"
I nearly tipped into the pond. "Seriously? You really need help in naming things. I like the black part, all Magic Knight squads have a color and an animal, right?"
Yami nodded. "Fine then, Black Brutes,"
"Brutes are not animals!"
"Black Brutus,"
"Isn't that someone's name?"
"Black Buff Brutus,"
"You really like your Bs"
"Huh, I'll like to see you think of an animal suitable to me,"
I thought back to the baptism and the way Yami was charging at me. I had compared it to a rhino. Or maybe a...
"How about a bull? Big, buff, menacing and fits your love of the letter B,"
"Bulls," Yami muttered to himself. "Black Bulls..."
...
When I wasn't training with Yami, I was with William. His favorite topic is about little birds, and he taught me how to "bake" which is to put food into a box heated with coals. The first time it happened, the soft thing William and I mixed up turned into a crispy brown lump. When you cut it up on the inside, it is a nice fluffy texture. William calls it "bread" and he feeds it to the birds nesting in his garden of trees he started to grow.
While we fed the birds, I like telling William anything on my mind. He is a very good person to talk to, and I can rant to him all day if I could. Today, I was telling him about the history of why the Stellar Village is the way it is, and what he thinks about it.
"Apparently, Stellars were great friends with the race of elves,"
"Elves?" William looked up from sprinkling bread crumbs. I could see I've caught his interest.
"Yeah, the race with pointy ears. Anyway, Stellars and Elves enjoyed trading beliefs and magic techniques together. They also shared the fear of humans. Back then Stellars had an ability of second sight. So they knew that humans had jealousy of them and high magic power. When the elf leader rescued and fell in love with a human, the village was dismayed and stopped sharing their most sacred information with their allies. The elf leader tried to mend fences with the Stellar village by inviting them to his wedding. However, the stars warned the Stellars on the day of the wedding that blood will be spilled, and they avoided the marriage. They couldn't send anyone to warn the elves either, as anyone who attends the wedding would perish..."
"Oh?" William seemed deep in thought.
"Sure enough, a forest of arrows appeared over the wedding. According to the text, the village could see the massacre from star watching platforms. No one knows what happened to the elves afterward. The village suspected that they're all dead."
"Hnnnn..."
"The leader of the Stellar Village then set up patrol systems to keep the village safe from humans. Rather, kill all who step within five miles of the outskirts of the village. You can't tell anyone the location if you're dead,"
"But people might just discover it where all the dead bodies are,"
"No, those bodies are a good warning on keeping away. I hate this way of working. Why kill innocent people just out of fear?"
William was silent. "Perhaps to have revenge. Or destroy one who hurt him. That leader is protective of his people. He won't risk the same fate as the elves,"
"The leader lied about me," I said darkly. "He said I was weak. He said I had no magic, no Stellar type. Why?"
"Fear? Your magic can do quite deadly things. For instance, you could take his leadership and defeat him quickly,"
"But think of how useful I can be for the tribe. I can enchant the spring to never stop flowing. I can send a spear that'll never miss its prey. Why wouldn't he want that? Heck, I can just make an invisible barrier around the village and save some people labor on something else then patrol,"
"If he did tell you from the beginning, will you still be here?"
I paused. "No. I wouldn't even have heard about the Clover Kingdom. I will be next to a place that I don't even know exists,"
"How did you get to where you are now?"
"I guess my opinion on the kill people thing lead me to here. I decided on sparing two people, and they took me here,"
What if I didn't hear the crash? Will Fuegoleon and Nozel simply escape, riding their brooms and half a day later, be back safe and sound? Or would they be found by another patrol and killed? It made my head spin thinking about my different life, and it also made me feel a little hallow. I didn't have time to consider this feeling as a mage came bursting into the peaceful tree garden, alarming birds.
"Emergency!" he bellowed and the squad all emerged onto their balconies. Captain Juluis was the last to appear, standing at the top of his tower. "The Diamond Kingdom! It's attacking!"
