(Chapter 10) Memories
"I never wanted any of this to happen. I'm sorry Axel. I'm so sorry." Gregg said as tears started to run down his face.
"What was that back there Gregg? Tell me!" I yelled at Gregg.
Gregg sat In silence.
"Tell me damn it!" I screamed.
Gregg cleared his throat as he spoke.
"A couple days ago a group of vampires from an unnamed scientific research organization, came to me and offered me a lot of money to test something for them. I said I would." Said Gregg.
"What did they ask you to test?" I asked.
"That vial of liquid he drank, causing his transformation. They wanted to weaponize it against the werewolves. Thats why we were after him." Terra said, cutting into the conversation.
"Yes. That is true. I was the first test subject to be allowed to roam the city. I figured they were hoping for some live combat. They probably watched that fight. Saw you come in here after me... Gonna come looking for my body... They need to find it..." Gregg mumbled.
Looking up at the roof.
"It's made of glass. Do you see it Axel? It's glass... I'm to tired to move. But it's for the best. They won't be able to question me. They won't be able to find you..." Gregg said drowsily.
"What's he talking about?" I ask Terra.
"Look up." Terra replies.
I do as I'm told and look up towards the ceiling. I hadn't noticed until now but much of the roof was glass. The light glow of morning starting to shine through. Beams of light landing near Gregg.
"Gregg! Move! You're gonna burn!" I yell across the room.
"It's okay Axel. This needs to happen. It's unavoidable. There's more you must learn to survive in this world. I'm sorry that I won't be the one to teach you, but you still must learn. I have an old friend, his name is Avian. He can teach you everything else there is to know. Tell him I sent you and if he teaches you his debt to me will be cleared. You can find him... You can find him at-" Gregg suddenly passes out and falls over.
"Gregg? Gregg wake up! The sun! It's-"
(Flash back)
"So bright! It burns! AAAHHH!!" I screamed out in agony.
"Don't worry! I've got ya kid! Get away from the window! Yelled a stranger in the distance.
Suddenly I was covered in a blanket and yanked into the shadowy part of the room.
"Are you alright kid? Let me see your face..." The man said as he looked me over, messing with my face slightly.
"You'll be alright. It was only a couple seconds." Said the stranger.
"What happened? Why did the sun burn me?! Who are you?!" I yelled at the stranger.
"Calm down kiddo. You're alright. My name is Gregg. And the sun burned because, you're not human anymore. You're a vampire." Said the man.
"What? Thats crazy! You put something on my skin or something! Tell me where I am!" I demanded.
"Just take a deep breath buddy. I didn't do anything to your skin. The sun just has that affect on our kind. And you're in an old building near where I found you." Said Gregg.
"You're lying! Let me leave!" I scream at Gregg.
"I never said you couldn't... You can leave whenever you want. I was just keeping you safe during the change." Gregg said calmly.
"Okay... So I can just go, right?" I ask.
"As soon as I prove to you what you've become." Gregg states.
"Whatever old man. Hurry up so I can go." I reply rudely.
"Do you see this? It's a bag of blood. I'm sure now you've felt it by now... The thirst... The hunger..." Said Gregg.
My throat got dry and my stomach lurched. My teeth started to hurt and chatter.
"I... I don't feel any-" I'm interrupted as my teeth suddenly extend and sharpened!
"What is this?! Whats happened now?!" I Yell at Gregg, demanding answers.
"Its all part of who you are now kid! Get used to it!" Gregg yells as he throws the blood bag at me.
Without hesitation I leap through the air and catch the bag in my teeth, emptying it before I reach the ground.
"Now that you've eaten and got some energy in you, go punch a hole into that wall." Gregg says pointing to the wall behind me.
Still in an excited daze from my snack, I lunge at the wall without hesitation! I smash my hands against the walls spreading cracks everywhere! As I pulled away it crumbled into large pieces and fell over.
I trembled at the sight of my own strength.
"Do you believe me now kid?" Gregg said with a chuckle.
"So I'm a vampire now?... Cool. What else should I know? Where can I go? What can I do?" I ask.
"I'll explain it all in good time." Gregg said with a smile.
"My name is Axel by the way, and thank you. I'm sure I'd be dead already if it wern't for you...
(Present day)
"GREGG! NOOO!" I screech across the room as his body bursts into flames!
I try throwing myself to him but Terra Held me in place.
"Let go of me! He's going to die! Let go you crazy mutt!" I yell at Terra viciously.
Suddenly Terra slapped me in the face! I was in shock.
"Listen you little shit! Theres nothing you can do! Look at him!" Terra yelled, her voice trembling.
I look upon Gregg once more, and for the last time.
His body was practically gone... It was smouldering away into nothingness. I could hear the distinct crackling noises from his body, the sound of his bones breaking down into dust...
silent tears run down my face as I speak.
"I won't forget you... Old man..."
I waited till his ashes had gone silent before getting up again.
"He said people were going to come search for is body. We have to go. Terra said sternly.
"We? I thought this was a temporary partnership. We confirmed Gregg is dead so you can go now! I don't need you!" I scream at Terra.
"You're injured, you can't get around in the sun like this. You'll end up just like him." Terra says as she motions to Gregg.
"I can manage just fine on my own! I don't need some puppy watching my back!" I yell in Terra's face.
"Says the broken vampire punk thats lost without his lab rat of a guardian!" Terra screams back.
"Well You-" I was cut off suddenly by the sound of footsteps and voices in the distance.
"Move!" I Loudly whisper as Terra helps me across the room to another door. As we once again set aside our differences.
We flea from the room and down a nearby stairwell back down to the ground floor.
We hear mumbled yelling as we leave the building into a shadowy alley.
"Find them or I'll see to it that you all burn!"
