Ruby’s POV
We’d been stranded here for nearly two weeks, and we only had minimal necessities like shelters and rain water, but it was clear that we were running low on drinking water fast.
Rather than my skirt and shirt I had previously been in I was now wearing a tank top and shorts, which nicely left the scar on my leg on view for everyone. At least now I could actually walk, rather than before when I could only limp a few feet across the beach. Although no one considered me any help though. Today was going to be different, I was going to help.
I stood up from my seat in the sand and made my way over to one of the men who I hadn’t spoken to who by the looks of it was about to go and do something remotely helpful to the group.
“Hey, do you need any help with anything?” I questioned walking by his side.
“No I am fine. I’m just going to chop some wood, why don’t you keep Claire company?” He smiled gesturing the pregnant woman.
“I’m sorry; obviously you heard that as a question, I’m going to help, even if it means I’m just there to talk. Claire’s napping, and I haven’t got to know you yet,” I smiled back trying to act friendly.
“Fine. You can join me, but if you lose our hands that is your own problem,” He sighed carrying on walking into the forest.
I walked beside him with a smile on my face.
“I’m Ruby by the way. I haven’t really spoken to many people, but I want to help out in any way I can. Seen as I’ve practically done nothing yet to help other than sort out some people’s belongings, but I’m sure I can do more,” I shrugged still smiling, trying to act friendly.
“I’m Sayid. You are of help in not causing trouble. I don’t know how much help you can be for chopping wood, by the looks of it, you don’t have much upper body strength,” He stated.
“Well Sayid, I’ll just have to prove you wrong. I’m not completely useless, and I will prove my worth,” I smiled.
We stopped in a small clearing in the forest where there was already wood lying on the ground that had to be chopped into smaller pieces.
“So would you like the first go,” he smirked handing me the axe.
I had never used an axe before and something as simple as chopping wood was a foreign concept to me. I took the axe, as he moved a bit of wood, showing me where I should cut it, before he did the smart thing in moving a good distance away from me.
Swinging the axe backwards, I then brought it forwards causing it to connect with the wood and actually be imbedded in the log.
“I actually did it,” I squealed turning to look at Sayid. I quickly lost the happy smile and made my expression emotionless, “I mean of course I did it.”
He smiled, “Now are you going to take the axe out?”
Turning back to the log I gripped the axe, pulling it but it didn’t budge. I held on tightly pulling at the axe until it suddenly loosened. I lost my grip sending it behind me, before I fell onto my back as a sharp pain shot through my shoulder.
Within seconds Sayid was knelt next to me.
“Are you okay?” He questioned.
“I’m good, I’m sorry for throwing the axe at you,” I smiled innocently.
I began to sit up but my shoulder shot with pain.
“I think we need to get you to the doctor,” He stated helping me to my feet.
