"What you're seek is seeking you"-Rumi
Ada automatically assuming of the usual tardiness of Amaru, she carried out her usual busy work around her office.
The time was currently 8:52, Amaru was due to arrive at 9.
As time began to slip by Ada was startled at the sound from the phone, who she knew was Shauna letting her know that Amaru had arrived.
It was exactly 9:00.
An abrupt knock was heard from the other side of Ada's office door, as she responded letting Amaru make his way into her office.
Ada knew of the rules on therapist/ client relationships, but that didn't mean she couldn't stare. She was trying hard not to, but his aura was overpowering. There he sat, his eyes piercing her entire being. Unlike his normal hoodie and jeans combo, today he was dressed in a silk shirt, and black pants. What caught her eye the most? The gold linked chained that was around his neck. Interrupting her gawking, Amaru spoke up.
"Good morning, Ada", Amaru spoke almost seeming proud of his self, as a very evident smirk was on his face.
"Good morning, Amaru. I'm happy you've made it on time this morning. We're making progress", She spoke as her clipboard sat upon her lap.
"Yeah, I aint gon lie, the few last sessions. I've been kinda nervous to come in here. I dont do to well with stuff like this", he spoke, taking notice of Ada's body language. She almost seemed comfortable by him.
"...and why is that, Amaru", She asked getting a little serious. She had to get down to the business.
"This has been one of the only times, I have every admitted to my problems aloud. I've known from the jump, but I couldn't bring myself to get help until now", he said timidly
"What made you feel that way, Amaru.
Was it a pride thing?" She pondered. He ran his hand across his head as if in deep thought, his eyes then locking with Ada's. Ada was fresh to the approach she had to take to deeply get to Amaru's problem. It was unlike any other patient of hers , for he was far more sincere. Even though she had began to know the root of his problem , he still remained a mystery to her." Shit .. I mean .. From the time I was younger I've always taught myself to handle my own. Y'know , be a man. That was the way I interpreted it. It had to be done, and I figured i was the only one who could do it. Maybe I was naive.. I ain't really think a man was suppose to truly express himself."
Amaru shifted in his seat, as if he was getting comfortable. Ada felt as though a weight had been slightly lifted off her shoulders.
"Hmm.. Well I believe that you have to stop holding on Amaru.. A lot of times we see emotional and mental health issues that we don't often address in our community due to the absence of our fathers , to primarily the young black male. Believing as though you have to be " strong" by being emotionless and disheartened. Whether we like it or not, this absence that you may feel you have to fill can not be filled by confining yourself in your pain. You have to learn to let go.. let go of your ego, your hurt and any anger you may have toward that person .."In response, Amaru slowly nodded his head, taking in everything Ada said. Letting it sit on him. Yet this was very new to him, the energy Ada gave off was very comforting. Although she seemed very tense and content, it began to attract Amaru. She was good at her job, but Amaru was a challenge. Something that drew his interests towards her.
" I understand what you're saying .. Damn Ive never looked at it like that." Ada softly giggled under her breath while sliding her pen from under the clipboard.
" A lot of people don't. It's completely natural to make those decisions amongst yourself. We just normalize the effects way too often. I want you to practice trusting yourself. By that I mean, let yourself naturalize the state of not being completely okay. You have to let the little things go, before you can let the big things go. "
She penned her words on her clipboard before placing the pen back under the clip. It was only 9:45. For the first time they didn't have to rush to finish the session.
"Well , it seems we have a little bit of time left. Is there anything else you would like to discuss?"
"Yeah .. but it wouldn't involve anything concerning my problems." Ada widened her eyes in surprise. Taken aback by Amaru's response. Her lips slipped into a nervous smile.
"Anything strictly professional Amaru." Amaru bit down on his lips staring at the floor before parting his lips to speak.
"Lately it has been getting difficult for me to sleep. I could barely get any last night . I don't understand why it's only been happening recently", Amaru's eyebrows were furrowed as he spoke. Ada could sense that he was confused when it came to sleep.
"Amaru I have been able to call a couple of patients after session hours, if you really are in need of help", Ada asked. She was so at ease with Amaru. She usually wouldn't even bother with giving out her contact information, but something about Amaru intrigued her.
"Woah shit, really. If you could. That would be cool", He said excitedly. In his eyes you could see the excitement, that maybe he would be able to go to sleep for once and all.
"Yeah, that can be arranged. Remember Amaru I'm working to make you a better person. Whatever you need that's going to help you, I'm willing to do it", Ada said whole heartedly. She wanted for all her clients to walk out with a brand new mindset, a brand new way of living. I'm Amaru's case she wanted more than that for him. She wanted him to reach beyond that.
"I really appreciate you for that Ada, I'll call you tonight.", Amaru spoke with a smirk evident in his tone of voice. Ada simply brushed it off.
"I'll be waiting, Amaru. Have a nice day", Ada spoke allowing a small smile to grace her face, as Amaru left her office.
