At a recent writers conference, the keynote speaker commented, "I've talked with writers all over the world. Authors from other countries wonder why American writers shy away from political topics."

I know why. By nature most of us are introverts.

When an opinion is published, it creates a conversation doorway, possibly one the writer wishes remained sealed.

Cyberbullies and trolls jump at the opportunity to party. Fear of an e-hose blasting diaper debris prevents us from speaking openly.

My overt opinion about female fertility: We are fortunate to live in a time when safe medical care is available. No one should be denied that care if they want or need it. The only people qualified to make those choices are the woman, her partner, and their support system. If that right is threatened, it must be protected.
