She nervously picks at her food, it's not that she wasn't hungry, it's that her thoughts made her want to puke.

With furrowed brows, she looks up at Caroline. "Did dad ever cheat?"

Caroline chokes on her burger and coughs repeatedly, "What? Why?"

Sam opens her mouth but words can't seem to escape. She takes a sip of her water, "I just," She starts, not looking at Caroline. "I'm just curious."

Caroline is confused at the question but attempts to keep her cool. She takes a sip of her Coca Cola and tries to meet Sam's eyes, "Once."

Sams brows raise and her eyes widen, "How was it?"

Caroline takes various sips of her drink without meeting her eyes, as if reminiscing her past. "It was at a party," she stops and looks down at her food, swallowing a gulp. "He told me he was busy and wouldn't be going."

Sam awkwardly clears her throat, listening intently to her mother.

Caroline still remains quiet for the next couple seconds but finally snaps out of it, "I was there with a friend, you know, we were having fun and then,"

Caroline lightly smiles, "I found him sleeping with some girl." She shake shakes head, "I cried and asked him why," she lightly chuckles, "he was drunk and said he'd chose her over me any day."

Sam's eyes are widened and she doesn't know what to say. So instead she places her hand over Caroline's, "Did you forgive him?"

Caroline's cheeks are flustered as she tightly smiles, "He promised not to do it again,"

Sam's mouth widens in surprise and she shakes her head, "How do you know he never did it again?"

Her mother takes a drink, "I always suspected it happened many other times but," She shrugs, "I was naive and pretended not to notice the way he'd sneak out, lie to me, or just show obvious signs."

Caroline purses her lips to the side, "I loved your father, I was willing to forgive him no matter how much it would destroy me," she meets Sam's eyes, "Is everything okay with you and Billy?"

And there it is,

Caroline has lost Sam.

Sam snaps out her trance like state, "Everything's great." She attempts a smile but her tone is monotone.

Caroline tilts her head, "Sam, I'm here for you."

Sam meets her eyes, "I know...I would tell you if somethings wrong."

Caroline sighs, "You haven't told him, have you?"

Sam nervously licks her lips, "Not yet." Caroline is about to say something but Sam doesn't let her, "I will, okay? I just," she avoids Caroline's stare, "I just need time."

Caroline frowns, "And when another breakdown occurs? What are you going to say?"

"It's not gonna happen again." Sam says quickly, her chest beating rapidly. "I've got this under control."

Caroline sighs, "Control is the last thing you have," she leans forward, "You can't be naive and believe you can force your feelings to change."

Cue the tears.

Sam's eyes sting and she nervously bites her quivering bottom lip, "I-" she exhales in hopes to avoid the waterworks. "He won't want me."

Caroline chokes again, "What?" Her eyes widen at Sam's comment.

Sam shakes her head, "No, mom—I didn't mean it like that." She quickly panics, afraid of what Caroline might say or do.

Caroline is now in mother hen mode, "What did he do?" Her tone is not asking her to reply's, it's demanding her to reply.

Sam rubs her temple while closing her eyes and exhaling, "Nothing," she takes a breath, "He didn't do anything."

Her watery eyes threaten to release tears but she tries holding them back. "Please, I just said that out of impulse."

Caroline is about to erupt when she notices that Sam is on the verge of tears, "Fine, we won't talk about it today but if that boy hurts you, your dad will be receiving a call from me."

Sam's eyes shoot to Caroline, "No. You don't have to involve him."

Caroline scoffs, "I'm not just going to sit around and wait--"

"Stop." Sam whispers harshly, "Not here."

With that, she grabs her coat off the booth and
walks away, leaving Caroline with a headache.
