Don't Leave Me

(I was supposed to write a chapter about Nagito blowing shit up and somehow wrote an entire goddamn novel about a glimpse into his thoughts resulting in this chapter's length being cut in half. Good job, me. )

In the back of his mind, Nagito always knew his bad luck would come for you. It came for his dog. It came for his parents. It came for the kids who were stupid enough to try being his friend, and it came for the adults who had no choice but to try and take care of him as he was too young to take care of himself over the years. It was why he was always afraid of the day he fell in love, knowing his luck would get the poor soul hurt or killed.

And yet, he couldn't stay away from you. You were practically hypnotizing to Nagito, with your unique talent, charming looks, and a personality that had him curious. If he could find you so alluring while in your current state, then what would you be like if you came out of your shell? He had to know!

And so, when you didn't show up to class that morning, he volunteered to check on you.

"(Name)? Are you okay?" Nagito asked as he knocked on your door. When you didn't respond, he turned the knob and found that it was locked. He almost wanted to laugh. You really thought you could keep him away that easy? He picked the lock and went inside. He was surprised to see that you didn't leave through your window again, and was instead laying in bed. You didn't even seem to notice he was there.

Nagito walked over to the side of your bed to get a closer look at you. Your face was red and you were breathing heavily. He put a hand to your forehead, to which you didn't even flinch. It was burning hot.

You had a fever.

Nagito felt an empty feeling in his gut. He caused this. He didn't know how, but he did. He always did. This, along with the rest of the class being down in the dumps over the deaths of those two Reserve Course girls, made him almost feel sad. Especially since this means you won't be giving it your all during tomorrow's exams... wait. If you weren't better by tomorrow, you'd be unable to take the exam. If you were unable to take it, you would automatically fail. And if you failed... no, no, no, he was just being paranoid! Surely, they would understand you were sick and let you have a do over, right? Right!? But what if his suspicions were correct!?

"Hahahaha! You must be pretty smart, aren't you, (Name)!? Getting sick in an attempt to get away from me for good! Well, guess what!? No matter where you go, I'll find you! Whether it's a few minutes or several decades, I'll find you! Understand!?" Nagito yelled. You didn't respond to him at all. He quickly calmed down and regained his senses.

"What was that...?" Nagito asked himself. Just what were you doing to him? He was used to people leaving him, whether it be by death or growing sick of him, so what made you so special? He smiled. You truly were amazing. He brushed some of your hair out of your face and kissed you on the forehead, being glad that you seemed completely unaware of your surroundings and couldn't push him away.

"Don't worry. I'll handle this." Nagito said. On his way out, he noticed your phone out of the corner of his eye. He picked it up and got an idea. He made sure to add a... little something before going on his way.

His first step was to make sure you had someone looking after you, as he would be too busy to do it himself.

"Excuse me, Mikan." Nagito said as he approached the girl.

"H-huh? You w-want to speak with m-me?" Mikan asked.

"Um, I just wanted to inform you that (Name) is sick. She's currently in her dorm with a really bad fever." Nagito said. Mikan's eyes widened.

"A-Aaah! I'll be right there immediately!" Mikan said before running off.

Step one complete.

His next step was to have a talk with Ms. Yukizome.

"Huh? You want me to cancel the exams?" Ms. Yukizome asked. Nagito nodded.

"Yes. You see, everyone is clearly upset over the recent murders, and I want them to do their absolute best! Also... (Name) is sick. I don't want her failing because of things beyond her control." Nagito said. He knew that unlike just about everyone else, who viewed his love for you as extremely creepy, Ms. Yukizome viewed it as a normal schoolboy crush, but just a bit more quirky than most cases due to Nagito being... himself. So, showing sadness over the thought of you failing was bound to get him pity points, right?

"I'm sorry to hear that, but unfortunately there's almost nothing I can do. You see, there's supposedly going to be media coverage, making cancelling the exams extremely difficult." Ms. Yukizome said. Nagito's smile disappeared.

"But... what about (Name)?" Nagito asked. Ms. Yukizome sighed.

"I'm sure they'll understand she was sick and give her a second chance!" She tried to reassure him.

Step two... failed.

He didn't want to risk even the slightest chance of losing you. Yes, he loved all the Ultimate students, but you were special. Even if you were way out of his league, he can't help but be drawn to you, and while you weren't afraid to show disgust towards him like everyone else, you appeared to tolerate him at times! While Nagito didn't really believe in the idea of a soulmate (having someone made to fall in love with him sounded way too kind, even with his luck involved), he believed the two of you had grown to be almost bound to each other. And that's why he couldn't afford to lose you.

So, if Ms. Yukizome wouldn't do something, he'd just have to do it himself.

Meanwhile, Mikan had to leave to take care of another student who ended up falling down the stairs, and Chiaki had volunteered to look over you until she got back. She only looked up from her game when she heard your usual heavy breathing be replaced with a groan or if you sneezed and she would have to wipe your nose for  you.

"I wonder if... he's sick too..." Chiaki muttered to herself, being completely oblivious to you jolting a little from a chill suddenly shooting up your spine.

Back with Nagito, it only occurred to him after he got the drugs from the Ultimate Pharmacist that he could've just gotten something to help with your fever. Oh well. It was too late to turn back now. Seriously. Because someone else had them now.

Great. He failed again. He tried to cancel the exams and all he got in return was a giant dog. To have everything go wrong like this...

"I really am lucky!" Nagito said before the gym blew up.

His plan was a success after all.

The next morning, you woke up completely healthy. You looked around and saw Mikan asleep in a chair next to your bed. You were about to wake her up until something else caught your eye. An envelope had been slid under your door at some point yesterday. You went over and opened it.

Dear (Name),

If you're reading this, then you recovered like I hoped! Unfortunately, I won't be able to celebrate such a thing. I've been suspended. Luckily, Ms. Yukizome was kind enough to let me write this "goodbye for now" letter to you! I can at least take comfort in the knowledge that you'll be waiting for me when I get back instead of potentially losing you forever. It might suck to hear... or... read... these words from trash like me, but... I love you. You don't have to, but wait for me, okay?

Lots of love,

Nagito Komaeda.

P.S. Also, don't worry, I managed to obtain a way of checking on you beforehand.

Before you could question the last part, you heard your phone ringing. That little snot...

(So, uh, little fun fact about this chapter, several ideas for it were scrapped because I'm not a fan of making chapters SUUUUUPER long. Such as a callback to the first book where Nagito considers kissing sick Reader on the mouth before being like "nah, I wouldn't steal someone's first kiss while they're sick" or one that was cut for being OOC rather than length issues where he runs into Chiaki and internally calls her a bitch for stealing Reader's attention all the time.)
