Diego

I stopped at the abandoned gas station where Illianna said I should leave my car. It was a twelve hour walk from here. I silently cursed Antonia for making me do this, she begged me to do it and I could never say no to her.

I liked Illianna, she wasn't a bad person and she seemed trustworthy enough. I would've done it for her anyway, she's been through so much and I felt like I owed her.

Sighing, I grabbed my small backpack, put my gun on my waistband, and started my journey into the forestry.

It's only been about an hour since I left but as I expected, Antonia's number flashed on my screen. I smiled as I held it up to my ear.

"Babe." She said it with so much seriousness, I stopped walking.

"What's wrong Antonia?"

"I miss you." I could hear the pout in her voice. I rolled my eyes and continued to walk.

"I've only been gone for an hour." I deadpanned.

"So you're saying you don't miss me too. Wow, I feel loved."

"You're so dramatic, you know I love you." I told her.

"Yeah well, show it." I laughed softly, "I do, on a daily basis mi amour."

"Come home soon okay?"

"I will." I heard a voice ahead of me, and I told Antonia that I would call her back and hid behind a tree. There weren't supposed to be anyone out here for miles.

"How could you let her get away?" I heard an aggravated voice say.

"Bryson is going to fucking kill us man, we were supposed to keep an eye on her." Another said. I gathered that Illianna's old estate members.

"He's going to be back tomorrow, half the estate is out looking for her. He's going to slaughter us." The fear that I heard in the guys voice made me wonder what kinda man this guy is. I pulled out my gun and put on the silencer, I peered around the tree and noticed the guys were actually really close to me. Santiago said this was a recon mission but this was collateral damage., I doubt anybody will notice.

I shot the farther man, killing him instantly. I grabbed the other guy by his throat and slammed him into the tree, restricting his airway.

"Hi friend, I'm looking for something and you are going to help me." I saw his fingers to the gun that was on his waistband. I squeezed his throat tighter. "Ah, ah ,ah. I wouldn't try something that stupid. How'd you guys make it out here so fast?" He directed his eyes behind me, I turned and saw the two dirt bikes not far from where we were. I grinned maliciously.

"Good, save my trip a couple hours. A few more questions."

I saw the estate 20 minutes before I got there, the cocky bastard wanted us to know how much money he has. How much money he stole. I climbed off the dirt bike and walked towards the dip in the ground. There was a door just like the idiot said, a large steel industrial door that was deep in the ground and had no stairs. It was roughly a four foot drop so it wasn't terrible. I swung myself down the hole and stood back, I scanned around the door and looked for a camera, I saw a tiny one at the corner of the door and I took out one of the footage scrambler things that Chucho had made and stuck it to the camera. That kid was a fucking genius.

Once it was clear that the camera was bugged I looked at the bottom of the door to see if it was rigged to an alarm system, he guy told me it wasn't but I didn't believe him. When I couldn't find any wires on the ground I took a chance and used a crowbar to break the rusted lock, looks like nobody's come back here in a while. When the door opened I looked above to see another camera just pointing at the door, I stuck another one of the scramblers to it and waited 30 seconds for it to do it's job.

I creeped quietly into the cells and walked from one empty cell to another, a pit grew in my stomach at the thought of going home empty handed for Illianna. I was about to turn around when I heard a quiet humming sound from the cell in front of me. I walked towards it and I felt my blood run cold in my body, the cell was covered in artwork and in the middle, sat Malina.

"Malina? Is that you?" I walked over to the cell and fell on my knees in front of me the bars, this wasn't possible, Malina died over 20 ago. She turned around at the sound of my voice and she dropped her paintbrush.

"Diego?" Tears formed in her eyes as she crawled to me, taking my face in her hands

"God, Malina. Have you been here the entire time?" She nodded, stroking my face affectionately.

Malina was the mother I had never had, she took care of me when my own parents were smoking crack in some ditch. She raised me and taught me how not to be what my parents are, how to just be myself. Like the rest of the estate, I took her death hard I was only seven at the time. She was my sunshine and without her I fell into silence, I didn't speak for weeks, I just cried and cried until I had no tears.

"Look how much you've grown, christ." She gushed. I held her hand in mine against my face. Then I remembered why I came in the first place.

"Do you know Illianna? Is her mother here?" I watched as her face fell and her happy tears turned into sad ones.

"Illianna is with you? At the estate?" I nodded.

"Thank God." She sighed. My eyebrows scrunched together in confusion.

"Why? Where's Illianna's mother?" I questioned again. She inhaled deeply. "Me. I'm Illianna's mother." Shock ran through my body. That wasn't possible, there's no way that she cheated on Marco, they were in the type of love you dream of having. They were a fantasy.

"How is that? Malina I-"

"Shh, my boy. Don't ask questions that I can't answer right now. Why are you looking for me?"

"Illianna sent me to see if you were alive. She misses you so much. We all do."

"She's happy there? Is she eating properly? She has a bad habit of not eating on a proper schedule and-"

"She's fine. Perfectly fine and healthy. We need to get you out of here and tell everyone that you're alive." She shook her head quickly.

"No. Diego, you cant't do that now. Don't tell anyone anything. Just tell Illianna that I'm alive. That's all. They will come here blindly without a plan and get killed. He won't kill me, I'm leverage so you don't have to worry about me." I hesitated, I couldn't just leave after seeing her. And I couldn't keep her a secret that felt like betrayal.

"I don't think I can do that Malina, I don't want to hurt anyone by keeping this a secret."

"Diego, you have too. You can't tell a single soul in that estate, nobody. You can't let Marco find out either. You know how he is." I sighed and agreed. If this was her will, I would do it.

"I love you all so much, I miss you even more. Soon we will be together okay? Soon." I nodded again. I felt like a child again, hanging on to her every word she said.

"We do too." She placed a kiss on my head and I relished it, this was the last thing I'll ever feel from her for a long time.

"Go back home Diego, it isn't safe here. Take care of her for me."

"I will. When you come home she'll be waiting."
