Age 6
Today was Zayn's first performance in the school choir, he was to play the Orange in the midst of all the other fruits and vegetables.
The play was a way of demonstrating their knowledge on the importance of eating healthy foods like an Orange or an Apple.
He had the last part of the song, the last few lines that left a light feeling that settled in the stomachs of everyone there.
His voice was soft and gentle, it didn't crack. His eyes were closed and he sung, a smile engraved on his lips.
Zayn was happy.
When the performance was finished, the group of kids squished next to each other on the stage and posed for the photographer.
"Cheese!" the photographer yelled, causing all the kids to shine their widest smiles.
It was the end of the day and kids were walking off with their parents. Small hands held tightly by big ones. Zayn was alone.
He stood with orange circles painted on his cheeks and his hands held together in front of him, he waited.
It was no surprise that neither his mama or his papa had came to see him, but seeing every one of his classmates go off with their parents left this heart crushing feeling inside of him.
Was he always going to be alone?
Zayn's big brown eyes were glossed over with tears that burned to fall, he was sad. He was so unbearably sad. And alone.
As he looked at the ground, tears streaming down his chubby cheeks, a face appeared. The boy was bending his knees and looking up at Zayn.
"Why're you all alone?" he asked with a frown.
The boy stood up straight and Zayn followed his face, looking into his green eyes that resembled the green circles on his cheeks.
He could be anything. A kiwi, a watermelon, a piece of celery.
"My mama and papa haven't come to get me yet," Zayn sniffled.
"Harry! Harry! Where are you?!" a woman yelled as she emerged from the crowd of kids and parents.
The boy turned and frowned even more, then turned back to Zayn. "I'll stay with you until they come," he said, a smile slowly forming on his face.
"Harold! Edward! Styles! I swear to God, you better come out now or there will be no tv time when you get home!" the woman yelled louder, her cheeks turning a bright red when parents started glaring at her.
"What if they never come?" Zayn whispered, tears still streaming down his cheeks.
Parents and kids started to exit out of the school, the woman looking around with panic on her face. She was scared.
The boy reached forward and wiped under Zayn's eyes, avoiding the paint so it wouldn't smudge everywhere.
He smiled wider. "Then I'll stay with you forever."
