Age 12
It was New Years Eve and Gemma had the responsibility of taking Zayn and Harry to see the fireworks at the large field just next to the playground about two blocks from Harry's house.
Obviously, she was bummed that she had to spend her first New Years as a sixteen year old with her younger brother and his best friend, but at least she got to see fireworks.
"Tie your shoes before we leave, Zayn," Gemma said as she pulled a red hat on.
She watched as Zayn fell to one knee and quickly tied his shoe, his fingers didn't fidget with the laces or struggle to make the bunny ears, he did it perfectly.
"Where's your hat?" Gemma asked, looking at Harry.
Harry's mouth formed a small 'o' and he turned around and dashed down the hallway to his bedroom.
"Thanks for taking them, my love," Anne said as she place a kiss to Gemma's cheek.
"Mom! You've already given both me, Harry and even Zayn kisses today. It's time you've stopped," she mumbled, a smile still growing on her lips.
"I just love you guys is all, even that precious boy." Anne was watching Zayn walk down the hallway to go to Harry's room where she could see her son looking around his messy room for his hat.
"We love you too, always." Gemma kissed her mom on the cheek this time and gave her a tight hug.
"Oh, he'd be proud of you and Harry."
"Yeah, probably. He'd love Zayn too," Gemma wrapped her scarf around her neck loosely. "He'd be proud of you too, mom."
Anne smiled so wide it seemed like her cheeks hurt. She gave Gemma another bone crushing hug before turning to the two boys who were finally ready with hats, scarfs and gloves.
"I'm sorry you couldn't spend time with your parents today, baby," Anne said sweetly and pushed a few strands of Zayn's long hair behind his ear. "We're glad to have you here with us, and we love you."
Zayn smiled at her. He unexpectedly hugged her tightly, wrapping his skinny little arms around her waist and nuzzling his face into her stomach.
When he pulled away, he proudly said, "I love you too! And Gemma," he gave Gemma a smile, "and you too, Harry." He looked to Harry who was already grinning
He took a deep breath. "And don't be sorry, you guys are my family too." And Anne left kisses all over his face after that, leaving him in a fit of giggles.
"Some for you too," she said to Harry, showering him in kisses and giving him a tight hug.
"Have fun, my cuties," she said once they finally made their way down the front steps and towards the park.
There were lots of people already gathered in large groups, some were sitting on the grass and staring up at the sky while others were standing and talking with each other.
Nothing was really going on as they set up the fireworks, just people talking and waiting.
"Gemma, look!" Zayn said as he pulled on her coat sleeve and pointed to the sky.
The sky that night was filled with stars of all sizes, some brighter than others and some nearly blending in with the darkness that engulfed everyone there. Stars never came out like that in the city, but here it was, a sky full of stars that were brighter than the sun their planet orbited.
Both Gemma and Harry follow Zayn's finger, their mouths opening at the sight and eyes widening to take in more of the beauty.
"It's pretty," Harry said and smiled.
Zayn looked to Harry and stared at the divot in his cheek. He pressed his finger into Harry's dimple and giggled when he saw the look his friend gave him.
"Were your born with these caves?" Zayn asked, poking both of Harry's dimples simultaneously.
"My dimples? Yeah, I was." Zayn nodded and kept poking them, a soft laugh leaving him once again.
"Can you fit anything in there?" Zayn tilted his head curiously and took his hands away from Harry's face.
Harry playfully punched Zayn's arm and glared at him. "Shut up, they're about to start the fireworks," Harry stated as he began to see people tilt their heads up to the sky.
"No, we still have a few more minutes," Gemma stated as she put her phone in her pocket and looked over to Zayn and Harry who were both looking to the sky.
"You know," she began as she took a step closer to them, "You're supposed to make wishes when the clock hits twelve."
Harry gave her a skeptical look. "Like a shooting star?" he asked.
"Yeah, you wish on every star in the sky rather than a shooting star," she explained. None of that was really true, but she liked to see Harry and Zayn smile, so she thought pretending magical things like this existed.
"So we can wish for anything?" Zayn looked at her.
"Anything, but only at twelve." The two boys nod and they watch the sky once more, because now the sight of fireworks means it's midnight and that means they can make a wish.
Only a few minutes pass by before Harry's turned to her and asked, "How much longer, Gem?"
"Just a few more minutes." Harry nodded and looked back at the sky.
"What're you gonna wish for?" Zayn asked, his eyes still on the sky.
"For money so my mom never has to work again." There was a determined look in his eyes.
Harry's mother always worked but still had the time to take care of him and Gemma, that was something that Zayn was envious of.
"She deserves to relax forever," Zayn whispered. "You have the greatest mom ever."
Gemma stood behind the two, listening to their conversation and smiling to herself.
"I'd wish for money but I don't think my parents work for money, I think they just don't wanna see me." Zayn's voice was shaky, but a tear never fell.
"Then what would you wish for?" Harry asked. He looked away from the sky.
Harry's seen many pretty things, like the puppies Gemma would walk to earn some spending money or the flowers his mother brought home from work on Valentine's Day, but nothing as pretty as Zayn's eyes.
They seemed to have the whole sky full of stars inside of them.
Zayn opened his mouth then closed it, his eyebrows furrowing as he thought about it.
"I'd wish for you to never leave my side," Zayn said with a grin. He looked at Harry and wrapped his arm around his shoulder. "I can't imagine next year without my best friend."
"You're so sappy, get away from me," Harry laughed and gently pushed Zayn away.
Zayn laughed too, his arm back by his side and his body warming with that familiar feeling of joy.
Then he stopped laughing, moving closely to Harry until their noses were centimeters apart and there was no where to look but in each other's eyes.
"It's New Years Eve so I get to be as cheesy I wanna be," Zayn whispered.
Harry grinned back and nodded. "Fine, but I'll make fun of you for it everyday afterwards," Harry whispered back.
Zayn shrugged and said, "Whatever, I don't care." Harry let out a soft laugh.
It was silent for a moment, both of them forgetting about their wishes and the stars and the fireworks and everything. It was just them, two best friends with joy rattling their bones.
Just as the first firework was lit and shot up into the air, Zayn hugged Harry tightly and said, "I'm glad I met you, Harry. I wouldn't be happy without you."
