Age 13
"Should we really let him have a sleepover on the one day we finally get to see him?" Trisha, Zayn's mother, whispered softly.
She had her chin in the palm of her hand as she stared at Yaser, Zayn's father.
"I like seeing him happy." Yaser smiled at the simple thought of Zayn's smile.
"But it's gonna be more than just one, you know that right? It won't just be Harry, it'll be two others."
"It doesn't matter, let's just do this for him, okay? He's never asks for anything," Yaser said softly and brushed a few strands of hair behind her ear.
Trisha smiled and nodded because it was true, Zayn never asked for anything and this was possibly the first time that he ever had.
The doorbell ring and just as she stood from the dining table, Zayn came running in with Harry close behind him, a wide grin on both of their faces.
"The door! Can I open it?!" Zayn yelled. His eyes widened with excitement when the doorbell ring for a second time.
Yaser gave them a quick nod and they ran back out of the dining room with Trisha following behind them. By the time she caught up with them, the door was already opened and suddenly four boys were yelling loudly out of pure excitement.
"Your house is huge, Zayn!" one boy, Niall, yelled as he stared at the walls scattered with art and a ceiling that was nearly twice his height. "My house only has one floor."
"That's an apartment," another boy, named Liam, said plainly.
"I said what I said, LiLi." Niall glared at him before smiling again at Zayn.
Harry giggled when Liam rolled his eyes.
"Mama, can I show them my room?" Zayn asked, his eyes still wide. He shuffled impatiently from foot to foot as he awaited his mother's response, she was waving goodbye to Niall's and Liam's parents.
When she closed the door, she turned to the four of them and grinned. "Of course! But no mess, understand?" The four boys nodded and made their way upstairs.
Harry hadn't seen her since they were seven, she looked different, almost like tired took physical form on her face.
"Even your room is cool, Zayn!" Niall dropped his bag at the end of Zayn's bed where Harry's sat.
"It's so clean," Liam said in fascination. "Not even my room is this clean."
Zayn gave Liam a smile before he walked over to his window, he separated two slats and stared outside. The stars nearly blended into the dark blue sky and the moon sat nicely behind dark clouds.
He turned and said, "It's dark!"
Zayn went and flipped the switch next to his bedroom door and the lights turned off.
"No, no, no," Liam began and paused when he felt Niall brush against his arm. "No!"
Liam hated the dark.
Then a bright light shined in his face, the one holding it was Zayn who sat next to Harry on the floor.
"C'mon, I wanna show you guys something."
Liam and Niall hesitated before sitting down. "What's this all about? I don't want any funny business. Like once, my pal Louis turned the lights off on me and next thing I know, I've got a finger covered in his spit in my ear! My ear! It was disgusting," Niall paused as he scooted closer to Zayn and Harry.
"Like, Liam knows him but you two don't and I swear, if you did meet him, you'd probably hate him because he's just that nasty and that—"
"Shut up, Niall. You really talk too much," Liam stated with a scowl.
"Don't be mean," Harry interjected.
Niall crossed his arms and stared at Liam. "What?"
"Harry's right, don't be mean. So now, I expect an apology." Niall scooted closer to Liam and gave him an intense stare. "I'll wait."
The four of them sat there for nearly five minutes in nearly complete darkness, Zayn still had the flashlight on and it was pointed on Liam.
"Oh my gosh, just say sorry, Liam!" Zayn growled. "I just wanna show you guys the present my dad got!"
"Why do we gotta be in the dark for that?" Harry said quietly.
"Because!"
"Because what?"
"Why can't we just move on?" Zayn huffed.
"Because I want my apology. I won't take any disrespect from anyone, especially Liam," Niall said, his blue eyes still staring at the side of Liam's face.
"It wasn't disrespect, I was just stating facts," Liam defended himself.
Zayn groaned and Harry laughed loudly. "Come on, just say sorry," Harry encouraged.
Liam huffed and looked to Niall. "I'm sorry for being honest."
A moment passed and then Niall shook his head. "Nope, not good enough."
"Are you serious?!" Zayn was beginning to become beyond frustrated with his friends, he was never like this when it was just him and Harry. "You guys are so annoying, man."
"It's alright, Zaynie. You can just show me if you want," Harry stated calmly.
Zayn pouted. "But it's no fun if only you get to see," he whispered.
Liam frowned at Zayn's words and then turned to Niall once more. "I'm sorry for being disrespectful, now can we watch what Zayn wants to show us?"
Niall smiled and nodded, uncrossing his arms and then turning to Zayn.
Suddenly, all of this attention was far too overwhelming for him and was suddenly fumbling with the white box.
He gave the flashlight to Harry as he slowly opened it and pulled out a clear cube prism, he placed it on the floor of his room and took the flashlight back.
"I-It might no be as exciting as I thought, but I think y-you guys will like it." Zayn smiled nervously as he held the flashlight near the prism.
The light shined through, creating a long spectrum of colors that extended a few inches from the prism to the middle of Liam's shirts.
"Woah," the three boys said in unison.
"You just made a rainbow," Niall said softly. He placed his hand in front of Liam's shirt and the colors were shown on his skin. "I'm a rainbow!"
"How'd you do that?" Liam asked.
"My dad said it's something with how the cube bends light and makes a rainbow." Zayn grinned.
"It's physics. Gem talks about it sometimes when she has to study for a test."
"Really? Wow, we're proper scientists then." Niall stretched his arm over Liam's lap until the rainbow was covering his entire arm.
"Let me try!" Liam took the flashlight from Zayn and lifted the prism. He shined the light through it until there was a vibrant rainbow on Zayn's face.
"Rainbow Boy!" Harry giggled as he looked at Zayn.
Zayn looked at him as he smiled, his eyes filled with colorful stars. "Pretty, right?" Zayn asked as he winked and posed for Harry.
Pretty wasn't a word that could describe Zayn in that moment, there was something powerful and divine about the combination of Zayn and rainbows.
Harry smiled back. "Pretty."
