Rick
"Rick! Carl! Oh, how we've missed you so!"
My mother reached up and took my cheeks in between her index finger and thumb, and moved them up and down simultaneously.
"Mom," I chuckled and hugged her as tightly as I could without hurting her.
When we released each other from our embrace, she looked over at Michonne, Andre, Judith, and Jada in awe.
"It seems like ages since I've seen you all! Andre, come give Grandma a hug!"
He ran over to her and hopped up into her open arms. She hugged him as tight as she could and when she released him from her embrace, she kissed his forehead multiple times.
"Michonne," she smiled, "You look just as gorgeous as ever!"
She reached out and embraced Michonne. They both cane out of the embrace smiling, but Michonne spoke first.
"Thanks, mom. You do, too. But of course, you knew that!"
They chuckled to each other and when the room began becoming silent, my father spoke.
"I missed you guys, too. I just have been having so many problems with my knees and back lately. Just know that we've been thinking about you since you first called. We've been a little worried, but seeing you here today actually settled my nerves a bit. We're so glad to have you all here."
Michonne gave him a wide grin.
"Thank you so much, dad."
"Of course, doll. You guys know you're always welcomed here."
My mother spoke again before anyone else could.
"You guys can put your things up in the guest rooms. Ricky, Michonne — you'll have your own. Carl— you can have your own. Andre and the babies can room together. How does all that sound?"
Michonne and Carl modded.
"Anything right now sounds great to us," Carl agreed.
My mother nodded and led us upstairs to all of the rooms. She pointed us to the kids' room first, and then guided Carl to his. She finally told us which room would be ours, and we immediately went in and began unpacking. When we were finally finished with all of the clothes, shoes, and accessories we'd brought, Michonne plopped down on the bed with her face in the pillows. She turned on her back and sighed.
"I really don't know how you wouldn't hate me for getting us into this," she breathed. I shook my head and laid next to her.
"Michonne, sometimes I wonder if you really know how I truly feel about you," I began. She shook her head.
"No, I do. I —"
"Let me finish." I turned to face her and she did the same and propped her head up on her hand so that we were level to each other. "You have been a light since I first met you. When I started having feelings for you, I would always ask myself 'why in the hell am I falling for this woman so hard, so fast?' Eventually, I realized that it wasn't because I'd just lost Lori or because I needed someone or anything like that. It was because, well.. Michonne, you are literally the most down to earth, deep, beautiful, intelligent, and amazingly unique person I've ever met in my entire life. You have a magnetizing effect on people.. You care about just about everyone more than you care about yourself.. You're so passionate about everything that you do. You're everything," I paused to gather the thoughts I had left.
"I know I'm babbling now, but... I just never imagined in a million years that I'd be here. Our family is beautiful, my life is beautiful. I've got this beautiful woman that I get to come home to every day, that supports me throughout all of my toughest decisions.. You complete me. As cliché or predictable as it sounds. You are the reason why my son and daughter still have a mother in their lives. The reason I am a better man than I was a year ago. You came to that hospital every single day to talk to me or even just read to me.. Just to hold my hand. You helped me with rehab for seven months, and then helped me around the house months and months after that. You made sure I was healed. That was when I knew, Michonne. I knew for a fact that you truly, genuinely love me. That you aren't going anywhere, no time soon at least.. And I promise you that I'm here until the end, 'Chonne. Don't ever doubt that."
By now, there were tears falling upon her face. I used my thumb to wipe them, and let her rest her head on my shoulder.
"I know you didn't for mean any of this to happen. Some things are just spontaneous, and that's okay ... I guess while we're talking about spontaneity, I can ask you this very — slightly, random question."
I got off of the bed, and grabbed a black velvet box wrapped in a red silk bow out of my suitcase, smiling as I thought of the next move to make. Should I kneel then turn or turn then kneel? When I figured it out, I turned toward her and got down on one knee. I opened the bow clad box and smiled up at her.
"Michonne, you are the love of my life. You are everything. You are the mother of my children, the high I need when I'm low, and the laugh I need when I'm crying. You have been here for me in ways I've never felt before, from almost anyone. This past year or so has been one I'll never ever forget. And life with you by my side, with me taking your hand in marriage, sounds like one that I would die for. And if you're wondering, I already asked your father for his blessing."
The tears I'd wiped from her face now streamed down it, never ceasing. I smiled as I continued.
"So I guess what I'm trying to ask you is, Michonne .. Will you marry me?"
She nodded her head vigorously and wrapped her arms around my neck, never letting go even when I stood. She let go and I grabbed her hand, sliding the ring onto her finger and kissing her lips passionately. I smiled down at her as she wrapped her arms around me once more.
"I love you, Rick. Thank you for everything.. Thank you for loving me unconditionally."
This time, I wrapped my arms around her and smiled.
"No, Michonne. Thank you."
