The months went by, Mary and Francis we're happier than ever. They counted the days until they became parents, this was something they had wanted for so long that every day they had to wait felt like years. In Francis's eyes Mary grew more beautiful every day, even if she didn't see it.

5 months later...

Mary awoke suddenly as a searing pain filled her body. She instantly knew what this was, she was in labour. Her heart started beating quicker, giving birth was dangerous and many women and infants died. Mary couldn't leave Francis to rule alone, or leave him alone to care for their child. She needed to be strong and live through this.

Picking up a pillow, she thumped Francis to wake him. He sleepily rose, confused and annoyed at being woken up so abruptly.

"What's wrong?" He rubbed his eyes and looked over to Mary.

"It's starting" she groaned through the pain. Francis jumped up from the bed and ran out of the room.

"I'll get the physician!" He shouted as he left. Mary sighed and rubbed her stomach. She couldn't wait to be a mother.

A few moments later Francis returned with the physician who checked that Mary was alright.

"You can leave now your grace" the physician looked at Francis, who shook his head.

"I'm not leaving Mary." He held Mary's hand tightly and kissed her head. She looked up at him lovingly, she knew that men didn't stay for their children's birth but Francis was different, and she needed his support throughout the process. She admired him for being so bold, and she loved him even more in that moment.

Hours later...

The room was filled with the scream of a baby as an infant was lifted onto Mary's chest. She beamed down at it, her heart filling with so much love she was afraid it would burst. Mary looked up at Francis who's eyes were filled of tears. He smiled at her and squeezed her arm gently.

"It's a boy your grace" the physician smiled. "You are both in good health." He turned and left the room. A nurse reached for the baby, to dress him but Mary dismissed her.

"I wish to take care of my baby myself" she took a white woollen blanket and wrapped her baby up, the sitting back down into Francis's arms.

"A boy." Mary smiled, rubbing the baby's face, causing him to fall asleep instantly. "A male heir got Scotland and France." She knew this would please everyone, having a prince as an heir.

"He's perfect" Francis kissed Mary passionately. "You are amazing." He smiled at her.

"What should we call him?" Mary looked at the baby's face.

"I think James suits him." Francis stroked his little pink hands.

"I like James." Mary agreed. She lifted James up to her face and spoke to him softly "hello James. We love you very much." She beamed.

The new family stayed lying there in the early morning sun. Their lives were complete.
