okay but also I apologize in advance for the song. i'm sorry but it just came to my head at the time

The day seemed to start so great. You woke up early enough and got to class on time, and the sky was a beautiful bright blue, which usually indicated a wonderful day ahead.

Or so you thought.

Class was really hard. You didn't understand anything your teachers said. All the other students seemed to understand, but you couldn't talk to them about it since they pretty much dashed out before you could ask. And homework was piled up for you to get done before the end of the week.

During lunchtime it rained. You always sat outside to eat lunch because of how peaceful it was. But since the bench tables were all wet, you were forced to sit inside the cafeteria, a stuffy room with people chattering and the crowdedness that usually made you anxious.

At the end of your last class, you were looking forward to seeing one of your best friends. One you don't get to see that often. But she didn't show up at your regular meeting place. You thought she didn't want to see you anymore so she decided to ditch you.

You had so much to get done, juggling schoolwork, a part-time job, and so many other things that it felt like you were drowning in it. You couldn't keep up.

And that was the last hit needed to make you completely collapse inside.

As soon as you got home, you locked yourself in your room and huddled in a corner to cry. All the lights were off and your curtains were closed shut. Clouds covered the sun outside darkening your room even further. You could smell food your mom was cooking dinner in the kitchen, and even though your stomach grumbled, you didn't feel like eating anything.

You had homework to get done. You didn't feel in the mood to do it, but if you didn't get it done, then you would fail. And instead of just getting up and doing your homework, you sat there wasting time.

 Useless. Stupid. Weak. Crybaby.

How could such a hopeful day be so easily destroyed? You were so content and joyful this morning, only to get crushed by the events of today. It seemed like whenever you got a little too high up, you fall right back down. It was the worst feeling ever.

Your sobs started to calm as you sat on the floor for what felt like forever, knees pressed up against your chest and head ducked down.

A knock came to your door. "(Y/N)? Are you in there?"

Peter?

You froze upon hearing his voice.

"I um, we're supposed to study tonight....in case you forgot."

And you did forget. Wiping your eyes, you muttered a quiet, "Come in."

The door opened and Peter walked in with his backpack full of books and loose sheets of paper. He looked around the room for a moment, squinting as he tried to find you in the dark.

"(Y/N)?" he said, "Where are you? And why is it so dark in here?"

Peter reached over to turn on your desk lamp. His eyes moved down to the floor and found you, huddled in the darkest part of the room with tear stains on your cheeks and red eyes.

"Oh. Oh, gosh." Peter flung his backpack off and kneeled down beside you. "Hey, what's wrong? Did-did something happen?"

He put his hand on yours. And that was enough to make you start crying again.

"No, no, no, no, no. Don't cry. Uh, I'm sorry." Peter didn't know what to do. This was the first time he's ever seen you cry. "Did I do something wrong?"

You shook your head. "No, I just...I can't...I can't take this anymore."

"Take what?"

"Today was horrible. I didn't understand a word the teachers said. I have so much homework to do and they're all due in two days. My friend didn't show up to meet me and I was so looking forward to seeing her," you stopped to catch a breath from crying. "I'm so stressed, Peter. There's just so much I have to do. I thought today was gonna be great but I guess not." You then buried your head back down into your balled up position.

Peter stared at you, eyebrows furrowed. He realized he didn't like seeing you like this, curled into a ball and crying.

He sat there next to you in silence, letting you get your final cries out. He didn't know exactly what to say. Yeah you get bad days, but you're always going to get back up.

And out of the blue, a certain song popped into his head.

"I get knocked down, but I get up again. You're never gonna keep me down," Peter sang quietly while tapping his foot to the beat of the song.

You looked up at him, frowning. You sniffled and said, "What are you doing?"

Peter paused for a moment, then smiled. "You get knocked down, but you get up again. They're never gonna keep you down."

"Those aren't even the right lyrics."

Before you knew it, Peter played that dreaded song on his phone and stood up. He began to dance and sing along, pointing at you while singing his own version of the song.

"Peter, what are you doing?" you asked, fighting a smile.

"Cheering you up," he said. He grabbed your hand and pulled you up from your corner, trying to get you to dance with him.

Instead of dancing, you stood there with your arms crossed. "I'm not in the mood to dance. And you look stupid."

Peter pretended to be hurt for a second. You were almost going to apologize when he started singing again.

"You get knocked down, but you get up again. They're never gonna keep you down!"

At this point, you couldn't help but giggle.

Peter stopped dancing for a moment once he heard you laugh. He pulled you into a hug and said, "You're gonna get through this, okay? I'm sorry you had such a bad day. But I need my study buddy so you're gonna have to deal with my horrible dancing as long as it makes you feel better."

You laughed and smiled into the hug. He kissed your forehead then let go.

"You feel better now?" he asked.

"Yeah. Thanks," you said.

"Anytime."

Peter grinned at you. You looked at him, wondering how you found this strange but sweet boy. He always seemed to be there for you. And it turns out that he's a great hugger.

"Hey, just one thing," you said, "Can you like, never play this song ever again?"

"What? No, this is a classic! You can't silence art, (Y/N)!"

I get knocked down, but I get up again

You're never gonna keep me down

I get knocked down, but I get up again

You're never gonna keep me down

I get knocked down, but I get up again

You're never gonna keep me down

I get knocked down, but I get up again

You're never gonna keep me down
