| Chapter 12 |
Flashes of gold, reds, and oranges flashed through my mind's eyes. I felt the heat and the comfort. Despite being a child of the cold, this warmth energized me, not weakened me. I stepped closer to it, embracing the heat it provided. I smiled against the flames. It tickled my skin and gave me a sense of promise. A promise of what was to come.

I blinked awake, the feeling of a smile stretched across my face. I still felt the sense of warmth and comfort. The feeling of coming home. Of being loved. Whatever it meant, I was ready. But that had to wait until later because just then, Myra stormed into my room and ripped the blankets off of me.
That cold that swept around me used to bother me, but after activating my winter powers, I noticed that the cold had no effect on me anymore. I merely raised my gaze to Myra who looked ready for battle.
She wore black tights with a matching figure hugging top and a silver breastplate across her chest. Her long, dark hair was thrown into a side braid and she wore combat boots.
"It's time to get the training started. Get up, get ready, and meet me downstairs in the backyard," she commanded as she pivoted on her feet.
"No breakfast?" I asked as I got up with a groan. I stretched my body and released a sigh of relief.
"Breakfast is not necessary," she replied before disappearing out the door. I frowned.
"You always said it was the most important meal of the day," I mumbled. Then I sighed and ignored the hunger pang in my stomach. I would just have to heed her decision.
I walked to my closet and pulled out black active tights and a white sleeveless top. I grabbed my sneakers and threw my hair up in a tight ponytail. Then I went to the restroom, brushed my teeth, and got dressed before walking to the backyard.
Myra was twirling a knife in her hands and my eyes widened. "That's dangerous!" I shouted as I ran towards her and Myra simply tossed the knife up and caught it by the handle as it came down.
"You forget, Crystal, I've wielded a weapon for far longer than you have," she told me and I blinked.
"Ah...right," I mumbled as I shuffled my feet on the ground.
"Now then. Today, we're going to start with basic combat training," she began.
I frowned. "Shouldn't I learn how to wield my winter powers?" I asked.
"No. Before you can get into practice with those, you need to strengthen your body. This was how we started off in Magicia as well," Myra explained. "And," she added, "sometimes you won't be able to use your winter powers so it's safer to fall back on combat skill."
"Right," I trailed off. Then I awkwardly glanced at her knife and breastplate. "So, um, am I going to be guarding myself bare handed?" I asked. Myra smirked. It was not a good look on her. It automatically set me on edge.
"Day one. Learn to dodge attacks," was all she said before she lunged at me. I was so startled, I tripped backwards and hissed in pain as her knife nicked my cheek.
I felt warm blood trickle down my face but I couldn't stop to feel it. Myra turned around gracefully in the air and slashed at me with her knife. This time, I dodged by throwing myself on the ground. The grass underneath me tickled my skin and nose but I ignored it as I jumped to my feet and turned to face Myra.
"Are you trying to kill me?!" I shouted as I breathed in air and held onto my bleeding cheek. Luckily it wasn't very deep.
"Your enemies will be trying to," Myra replied with a careless shrug and a twirl of her blade. "So think fast, Crystal!" she exclaimed as she held up the knife and threw it at me. My eyes widened as I watched it speed towards me and not a second too late, I jumped to the side and dodged it.
With a grit of my teeth, I picked myself up and took a defensive stance. Myra had another blade in her hand and she was tossing it up as if it were a toy. I kept my eyes on her and recalled everything I needed to know about fighting.
I pulled up snippets of scenes from books I've read and even scenes I don't remember reading or watching anywhere. With a startled realization, I concluded it was snippets from my life prior to earth.
Myra jumped twice on her feet before lunging after me. I saw her movements before she even played it out. She would feign right then immediately try slicing my left arm. So with a firm stance, I lowered myself slightly and raised my fists.
Myra approached me and dove to the right, bringing her knife close before switching gears and trying to get me left. But I was ready. I grabbed her wrist, using her momentum to my advantage. I stuck my right leg out while pulling her forward with my right fist. She tripped over my leg and I jumped to the side to evade the knife.
Her head whirled around to face me with her mouth dropped open a little. My eyes were practically bugging out of my head. I had no idea I could do that or how I did that. "Wha..." began Myra before she shook her head and righted herself. "Well. That was impressive. I fell for the same tactic all over again," she said with a smile and it clicked to me. I did that to her back on Magicia seventeen years ago. "Let's carry on," she added before lunging after me again.

I hardly write fighting scenes so I apologize if this wasn't as smooth or as detailed. But I do hope it did its job! Do tell me what you think by commenting/voting! Till next time!
