| Chapter 5 |

My sixteenth year passed by in a blur and uneventful. My mother never found out about my leaving of the house...even if it was a block away. My birthday came and went. Winter was still as warm as ever. My grandmother took me back to the park to feed the ducks.

We would sit in mainly silence. Sometimes other people would walk past and greet us. I found out that I'm shy around new people. Go figures.

As I tossed another stale bread into the water, I turned to look at my grandmother. Her brows were pulled into a slight frown. Her fingers were toying with her necklace. Her lips would twitch as if she were going to open her mouth and say something to me.

"Gran? Is everything okay?" I decided to ask.

She stiffened and released a slow breath. "Yes. Everything is okay. Come. We should head back now," she simply replied as she stood up, wiped the crumbs off her black skirt, and adjusted her posture.

With a sigh, I stood up and repeated the process of wiping the crumbs off my jeans. I then tucked the rest of the bag into the purse hanging on my side. I glanced once more to the ducks and the rest of nature. It would be another year until I would come back out.

Together, I walked with my grandmother back home, keeping my eyes on the ground under me. I watched as the cracks of the sidewalk changed with every pace I took.

By the time I looked up, we were already home. My grandmother was up the porch steps while I still stood at the front driveway. I took in my home for the past seventeen years. It was still the same one story home with a pyramid looking roof that slanted out like an upside down 'v'.

"Let's go Crystal. Your mother will be returning soon," my grandmother stated as she unlocked the house and entered. I quickly followed. "I'll go prepare lunch. You should finish your homework," she added as she walked into the kitchen.

I sighed but went to my room nevertheless. I walked to my window and pulled it open, letting in the cool breeze. Clouds were starting to roll across the sky but the sun still shined through them.

I smiled softly and then walked to my bed. I pulled out my mathematics textbook and pulled open my lesson for the day. I immersed myself into it, learning how to solve the new equations and reviewing previous ones.

Once that was done, I decided to get some exercise in. I've started working out to lose my belly fat and tone myself. I was tired of seeing the small pudge in my outfits. I wanted to take care of myself.

So I changed into my active wear and rolled out a yoga mat for cushion on the hardwood floor. I started with warming up, then began my sets of squats, planks, pushups, and situps. That at least took an hour of my time a day.

Once I finished, I walked to my restroom and started my shower. I then dressed in black tights with a baggy shirt and threw my hair up in a high ponytail. I added fuzzy socks on my feet in the end.

"Crystal, lunch is ready!" my grandmother exclaimed and I walked out to join her in the kitchen.

"Is mom home yet?" I asked as I took a seat. My grandmother served me her classic spaghetti.

"Nope but I imagine she'll be in soon," she answered and I stuck a forkful of noodles in my mouth.

I then looked outside and took in the bare branches that shuddered from the wind. Fall in winter. A wonderful feat that might have only been happening here. I just wish we could have a proper winter one day.

I finished my food then put the bowl in the sink. I was going to wash it but my grandmother shooed me out of the kitchen. With a shrug, I took myself to the backyard. It was chilly but the cold never seemed to bother me.

I sat under the tree and gazed at the sunny sky with puffy clouds rolling by. I was ready to explore, wishing I had wings to take me soaring to lands with ice and snow. I've only seen pictures and I would find myself feeling sadness about not being able to experience it.

I got more comfortable and let the sun's rays, which were surprisingly warm, lull me to a sleep with the light scratching of tree branches rubbing against each other.
