My Life's Goal

Running, running.
I’m always running.
My steps quick and undefined.
I feel that I must hurry.

I don’t pay much attention.
I don’t stop and talk.
I must go, I must go.
All I do is head to my destination.

Everyone around me walks.
They laugh as I run.
They say I should slow down.
They say relax and have fun.

I cannot afford to slow down.
Rush it, rush it, rush it.
I must be ahead of myself.
I must think farther at all times.

What’s your future?
That’s what they ask each other.
They laugh and joke about having none.
I cannot joke.

My future is not my own,
Yet it is.
What I choose isn’t for me alone.
I must help the others.

The others.
The ones I care about.
They are there for me.
I will be there for them.

What does my future hold?
Trial and error.
Fear and rage.
But no quitting.

I can’t afford to quit.
Quitting will make me lose.
I cannot lose.
If I lose then we all lose.

I must be smart.
Always be on my toes.
Running, running.
I cannot stop.

I hurry in hopes of proving worthy.
I need to do my greatest,
Not try my best.
I’m am our last hope.

I will make true the dreams that died.
The dreams that weren’t my own.
For I have a goal in life.
To make those around me smile more.
