First Day at the Sandlot

The boys all went to their positions on the field and I ran with the bat to home plate.

"Smalls, you take left center, okay?" Benny said to him.

"Okay. Um, where exactly is that?" Smalls yelled to Benny.

"It's over there, man." Benny said pointing to Left center.

"Come on Smalls" I said to myself

"Ugh let's play already" Ham said

"Shut up Ham, give him a minute" I said

"Here?" Smalls asked

 "That's left. I said left center." Benny said

Small ran to where Left center was and looked at Benny

"Okay. Right. Here?" Smalls asked again

"Come on, Benny, man. He's never gonna catch the ball anyway. Let's just play." The boys were saying.

"What a jerk." Yeah-yeah said

Benny walked over to me asked "Can I have the bat for a second?"

"Sure" I replied handing him the bat. He smiled then yelled "Yeah-Yeah, get two." 

Kenny threw the ball at me and Benny hit it. The boys threw the ball in a swift motion going around the diamond. "Wow!" I heard Smalls say amazed.  

"Hey" Benny said to me. "Here" he said handing me the bat.

"Hey, Smalls, throw it to second!" Benny yelled.

"Okay!" Smalls yelled back

I got into position and heard the boys laughing and saying "She's not gonna hit it"

I didn't listen to them and I kept my eye on the ball. "Ready?" Benny asked. "Always" I replied. Kenny threw the ball and Crack! I hit it. It went right above all their heads and straight to where Smalls was. I ran the bases---first----second---third---and back to home! The boys stared at me amazed. "She's good! Yeah yeah she's on the team. Cool! She's awesome!" The boys were all yelling. 

I smiled and Benny gave me a high five. Then we both looked over at Smalls he was on the ground. The boys stopped cheering for me and looked over at Smalls.

"Benny. We told you. Come on?" The boys were all annoyed.

"A square, Benny. The kid's a square." Squints said.

"Come on. Throw it in. What the hell's he doing?" The boys were saying again.

"I don't believe this." Ham said 

Smalls looked at the ball and ran over to Kenny, and put it in his glove. "Here. Sorry. Sorry." Smalls said. He ran back over to left center. Benny and I looked at each other and both ran over to Smalls.

 "You can throw it, you know." Benny said.

"No. I can't. I don't know how." Smalls said upset. "Thanks for taking me here, but I think I'd better go." 

"Smalls come on. Stay, we're having fun!" I said

"No you're having fun, I'm getting embarrassed" Smalls said

"Come on Smalls we can teach you and then you'll see how fun Baseball really is" I said.

"No, I already tried to learn, I can't" he said shaking his head.

"Not thinking like that" I said.

 "Hey, hey. You think too much. I bet you get straight A's and shit, huh?" Benny asked him.
