The Camp Out

I was up in my room and my mom called me down. I grabbed my pillow and ran down stairs. I saw Benny standing in my door way and smiling at me as I ran down the stairs. "Lets go!" he said and started walking out the door. My mom held my back and said "No alcohol, drugs, and don't get pregnant". 

"Mom!" I said and she laughed I little "Have fun sweety" 

I ran with Benny to the tree house and when we got there everyone was there except for Smalls. I sat next to Benny and a few minutes later Smalls ran in and said out of breath  "Hey, guys, sorry I'm late. - My mom made me put on my jacket, and then she made me do the dishes."

The guys started laughing  "Your poor little mommy made you do the big bad dishes."

"Hey, you want a smore?" Ham asked Smalls

"Some more what?" Smalls asked

No, no, you want a smore?" Ham asked him again

"I haven't had anything yet, so how can I have some more of nothing?" Smalls asked again confused.

"You're killing me, Smalls." Ham said

"Smalls, have you never had a smore before?" I asked him. Benny laughed

"These are s'mores stuff. - Okay, pay attention. First you take the graham. You stick the chocolate on the graham. - Then you roast the 'mallow. When the 'mallow's flaming, you stick it on the chocolate. Then... - you cover it with the other end. Then you stuff." Ham explained

 "Kind of messy, but good. Try some." Ham said and gave Smalls the smore.

"Okay. Quiet, you guys. Shh! Shh! Quiet! Are you trying to wake it up? It just went to bed." Squints said quieting us down.

"What just went to bed?" Smalls asked

The boys all said "Shh! The Beast."

"Oh, yeah!" Smalls said loudly again.

"Shh!" They all said again. 

I looked around and realized that I forgot my blanket "Oh shit!" I whisper yelled.

"What?" Benny laughed

"I forgot my blanket at home" I said

"It's ok, here share with me" he said and then put part of his blanket on me. I blushed a bit and looked down.  

Squints quieted us down again and then started the legend of the Beast

 "The legend of The Beast goes back a long time... before any of us could even pick up a baseball. Back to a place called Mertle's Acres. It all started about, mmm, years ago, when thieves kept stealing junk from Mertle's Acres junkyard. So Mr. Mertle, the guy that used to own the place, got him this new pup from the dog pound. He fed him whole sides of beef... and turned the pup loose in the junkyard. And the pup was grateful. [ Thunderous Footsteps ] And so, in a few weeks, the pup grew into The Beast. And he grew big, and he grew mean... so that he could protect the junkyard with only one thing on his mind: to kill everyone that broke in. - And he did, and he liked it a lot! - [ Men Screaming ] The Beast was the most perfect junkyard dog that ever lived. A true killing machine. But after a while, the cops started getting phone calls from people... reporting all the missing thieves, the ones The Beast had killed. It added up to about -- guys. - It's true. - [ Growling ] They never found a single body. Not one. Some people say they all got away. But we all know what really happened. The Beast ate them. He ate them bone and all. The Beast was too good at his guard dog job, so the police said he had to be retired. My grandpa, Squidman Palledorous, was police chiefback then. He ordered Mr. Mertle to turn his backyard into a fortress... and chain up The Beast and put him under the house... where he could never get out to eat children and stuff. - That's where he's been for years. - [ Growling ] And that's where he'll be for the rest of his life. Because Mr. Mertle asked the cops how long... he had to keep The Beast chained up like a slave, they said until forever. Forever. Forever. Forever. Forever. Forever. And so, The Beast sits there under that lean-to, dreaming of the time when he can break the chain and get out, dreaming of the time he can chase and kill again."

"See, man? That's why you can't go over there. Nobody ever has. Nobody ever will." Bertram said.

"One kid did, but nobody ever seen him again." Ham said

"That ain't true." Smalls said

"Yeah, it is. He got eaten." Ham said scared

 "Nuh-uh. No. None of that's true. You guys are just making this up to scare Y/N and I." Smalls said shaking his head.

"Oh, yeah? Stick your head out that window... and look down." Squints said.

Scotty and I both got up and walked slowly to the window and stuck our head out of it. I saw chains moving and loud growling. Smalls and I both stepped back.

"He's down there." Smalls said

"You bet he is. Whatever goes over that fence... stays there. It becomes the property of The Beast... forever." Squints said.

>During the night<

I couldn't sleep. I didn't want to move around to much because I didn't want to kick Benny. I slowly got out from under the blanket and grabbed a lantern. I climbed up the latter at the top of the tree house were there is a deck kind of thing. I put the lantern down and stood at the edge and looked at the sky. I heard something behind me so I turned around quickly and saw Benny climbing up. "Hey" he said walking towards me.

"Jesus Benny you scared the crap out of me" I said.

He laughed and said "Sorry"

He stood to the right of me and we both were looking at the sky.

"So, you couldn't sleep. Me either" He said. "What were you thinking about?"

"Nothing. I guess I just wasn't tired. What about you, what were you thinking about. Oh wait le me guess, Baseball" I said turning to him with a smile

He turned to me smiling and said "No"

"Wait! THE Benny Rodriguez thinks about something else besides Baseball! I'm shocked" I said

Benny laughed a little. Then I asked "So, what were you thinking about?"

He looked straight into my eyes and said "You"

My smile dropped and I just stared at him. He looked down at my lips and then back in my eyes. I didn't know what to do so I broke the silence and said with a smile "You wear this hat to much"

I grabbed his hat and put in on my head. He laughed and then looked at me like before. "Let me fix your hair" I laughed. I started to fix his hair as Benny kept staring at me. My hands slowly went around his neck as I looked at him. A few seconds later he leaned in and kissed me. The kiss lasted about 15 seconds with small movements with our lips. We broke apart and then he said "Y/N, I really really like you. I have liked you since the first time I saw you playing with your ball outside. And then you turned out to be so much more than I thought. You love Baseball, you are amazing at it, and you treat the boys like they are family to you which is awesome." he laughed after saying that last bit.

"I really really like you too Benny, I have liked you since I first saw you too and I'm amazed at how much you love Baseball and I really do believe that you will be successful with a Baseball career." I smiled. We kissed again and then he broke apart quickly and asked "Will you be my girlfriend?" 

"I'd love to Benny. But are we gonna tell the boys?" I asked

"Lets keep this our secret for now" he said.

Then we sat down and looked to the sky again. I rested my head on his shoulder and dozed off.
