Rabbit (Scenario 1)

6 1 1

As I scavenged through the underbrush for food, I kept my ears perked up for any predators that might be nearby. There were many foxes and crows in the area, as well as lots of food and bushes to hide in.

Suddenly, I felt something. A vibration in the ground. A huge paw stepping down on the leaves. I bunched my muscles, ready to run. My "fight or flight" response was kicking in, flowing energy and adrenaline through my small body. I felt like I was going to explode with bunched-up anticipation.

Right when I saw the glint of red-orange fur through the trees and the scent of fox wafted over me, I sprang out of the bush, landing on my feet and running swiftly through the forest. The fox scrambled close behind.

As I ran, I could feel my extra strength ebbing away, leaving behind a coldness I had never felt before.

The fox got closer and closer.

The paws louder and louder.

The scent stronger and stronger.

Finally, the fox caught up to me, and I stopped. I did not want to run farther than I had to. I got prepared to dart out of her grasp, but then I saw she was staring at me. The look of consent between predator and prey. I looked back, and something beyond our world passed between us. That something had to die for something else to live.

I didn't think if I would miss the world.

I didn't think of the baby rabbits I would have.

I didn't notice the sound of wingbeats coming closer and closer.

I only had one thought:

Release.
