The door at the end of the hall slammed shut, bringing Linh's cries to an abrupt halt. My momentum carried me right into it, the impact ringing in the air and leaving my shoulder and side aching. I slammed my fist into the metal, my frustration covering the pain.
"LINH!" I shouted. I hit the door again and backed up, panic slowly spreading through me. My breathing was erratic, my heart pounding in my ears. They took her. They took her.
I couldn't hear her anymore. The silence behind the door was worse than her screams, echoing louder than any sound could.
"LINH!" I screamed again, knowing it wouldn't do any good. Everything felt wrong. Something was solidifying in my chest like an anchor, rooting me in place. I could see the shadows spring to life, responding to my fear, my anger. For once, controlling shadowflux was coming naturally.
I focused my anger at the door, the only barrier between me and my sister.
My fists clenched and the metal crunched in on itself, my strength in telekinesis nearly doubling with the adrenaline coursing through me. I flicked my wrist, and the door flew off its hinges and clattered to the floor behind me.
The Neverseen turned, the white eyes on their cloak glaring at me from under the harsh lights. Linh lay bound on a table, bleeding from a hundred different cuts. Her silver eyes were wide and pleading. My throat clenched painfully at the sight of her, and I fought to keep my balance. My nails dug into my palms and I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to focus.
Lady Gisela seemed almost pleased, standing over my sister with a strange device in her hand, her amusement contrasting her companions' fear.
"Finally," she said, her voice breathless with awe. "Well done, Tam."
The scene flickered and disappeared. I heard a footstep behind me and whirled around, my fist hurtling towards the source. I felt my blow connect when pain flashed through my entire body. My knees buckled and everything went dark.
