"Well," he said, fingering the bead as he rolled it between his fingers. "Are we going home?"

I hesitated, already knowing my answer. But choosing that path would only lead me and my brother into rougher waters. I didn't want to do that to him.

"Do you want to?" I asked softly as the coaches stood by.

Tam shook his head. "I'll do what you want, Linh. It's up to you."

I bit my lip and stared at the ground. "No. I don't. But do we have anywhere else to go?"

I looked up to see his hand outstretched, and a rare smile on his face. "There's a reason a crystal has so many facets, right?"

"Time is ticking, Waywards," Coach Wilda warned us. "What will you decide?"

I look at my brother, and he met my eyes. I wrapped my fingers around his and gave him a small smile. "Lead the way."

He gave a half-hearted smirk and held the crystal up to the light. "That one looks nice."

"Tam," I said suddenly, returning the pressure he was giving my hand. "What happens to Mom and Dad when we don't come home?"

All at once, his expression darkened. "They'll be okay. You and I both know they will." His grip relaxed as his brief happiness faded. "They're better off without us."

And with that, he pulled me into the light.
