PART ONE: THE SCARRING OF SUNSHINE
CHAPTER FOUR: 12:00
[I Need You: M83]
1st JANUARY 3000
I solemnly sit flaccid on the arctic floor. Waiting for Ansel to return with my punishment and duties. After my speech. I was handcuffed and dragged literally to the Northlake holding cell. Apparently they it’s against the law to stand up for yourself and not act in a communist way. I know I’m not an alien, and I do not practise what they call Christianity, but my father used to say that God made us special each of us with different talents. I’m sure God wants us all to showcase our talents. So why are the aliens so particularly about being exactly the same? I dismiss the thought as I see Ansel coming towards me. Holding an envelope. He shoves the paper in my face.
“What’s this?” I ask not being able to obtain eye contact.
“It’s your duties that you’ll have to do around here.” He says without compassion. No emotion at all.
I tear the envelope open.
“Be careful. You better not rip the letter.” He says. I scowl and ignore. The letter reads.
Dear Andie Kruger. You will have to report the office to collect your equipment. You will be on delivering duty. Cleaning the toilets, dusting the streets. And finally scrubbing off your disgraceful piece of art. Good day!
I screw up the letter and push past Ansel to get to the office but he pushes me back against the wall. Obviously just as furious as me.
“What was that for?!” I yell.
“What were you thinking? You have disgraced your family.”
“What’s wrong with artwork? Don’t you ever find the Northlake boring? You wear the same bloody things every day. You can’t show your talents. What kind of life is that?”
“It’s the kind where we are happy, peaceful. You see what happened to the Zodiac when they started cherishing diversity. It’s shambolic. We aliens are not going down that road. We are perfectly happy smiley people. Destruction only began when you set foot here.” He screams.
“Really. You are perfectly happy people. Right now I see a boy. Destine to be true to himself. But he scared; scared of what will happen to him if he told the world he was an explorer. Now he is stuck with the maintenance and posting job.”
“I’ll have you know I actually enjoy maintenance. Infact my parents said it’d be best for me to do it. They know what’s best for me.”
“When will you realise that parents aren’t perfect beings who always are right. They lie to. Even to keep you safe they’ll do the most unpardonable things. I’m talking from experience here. My mother used to lie. Lie about my identity, my father. She’d try to morph me into the devil she is. And guess what. I believed her. She’d spit nasty thoughts and things about me .Telling me I was stupid, worthless, a waste. But when I visited the Kruger’s they taught me not to be afraid of the truth and that I was actually a creative, daring and adventurous girl. And I am. From then I stopped living under my mother’s cloud. I stayed true to myself. I did what I wanted. You know what your problem is. You can’t accept the truth. I don’t know what your parents, friends or family said to you but the ignorance is not bliss. Our lifetime is a very short time. You do not have the luxury of time to keep lying to yourself. God would want you to be truthful. It’s bad enough to lie to others but it’s another story to lie to yourself. My father used to tell me. Any life, no matter how long and complex it may be, is made up of a single moment--the moment in which a man finds out, once and for all, who he is. Do you want to continue living someone’s life? Or do you want to tell your family about your love for exploring. It’s your choice not mine, your friends or your families. Choose wisely. Don't compromise yourself. You are all you've got” I look intently at him for a few seconds then budge past him. That’s one thing I hate about this world. Lies. It can really damage a person and by the looks of it, lying has really damaged Ansel. Lying has damaged me. Without looking back I enter the office. Ready for my punishment.
