The first morning Peter woke up after the incident, he stopped to stare at the ceiling for a solid five minutes. He traced every line that etched itself into the plaster and watched every spider crawl on stubby little legs, and he watched as hundreds of specks of dust hoarded around the light that would stay off with dull eyes that hadn't lit up for at least twelve hours now.
Dull eyes that hadn't yet shed a single tear and dull eyes that would remain trained on the ground of the rest of the day. That suited his face, grey cheeks and lips that were the opposite of a smile. He didn't even bother with his hair that day, allowing it to hang around in messy strands because a part of him had expected you to come up to him in the halls as you usually did and fix it- fix him.
"C'mon, just hold on a little longer."
He saw the scene, he saw the totalled car and he saw your tears that stained your cheeks. He heard your heartbeat for a solid ten seconds after he hit the ground. The beats were few and far between before they stopped altogether and he swore that at the same time he felt his heart stop too. In fact, Peter Parker felt his entire world stop because he couldn't imagine his without you in it.
He didn't know why he went to school that day but all he knew was that he woke up feeling nothing, Somehow, in the span of twelve hours Peter had become numb to the ache in his chest and the the feeling of frustration that was eating away at him from the inside like a parasite, and the thoughts of you that swam through his brain like it was a fish tank- a rounded bowl with no exit.
The skies that morning were grey, from the second he woke up to the moment he kicked the door open later that day when he finally broke down.
He remembered your first kiss at the fair, right after you told him that you didn't kiss on the first date. Your lips were soft and tasted of the cherry chapstick you always kept on your desk in biology. He remembered when you left that expensive restaurant at only six pm to get Mcdonalds because a cheeseburger and fries sounded better then the Italian neither of you could even pronounce. He remembered your hands that aside from last night, were always warm. Last night it was ice cold, finger twitching before your heart stopped its unsteady rhythm.
And he remembered not feeling alone because for the first time in two years Peter Parker felt truly alone. Every seat beside him in every class was empty, including the seat in the gym where they announced the news and that wasn't the second time Peter felt his heart break in only twenty-four hours, but the third, because the first time he felt his heart shatter into two was right before you left when he said those seven words that he'd come to regret for the rest of his life;
"I don't think I love you anymore."
