The classroom held loud chatter and laughter of students at their desks. Students either leaned towards each other or sat on desks to talk and gossip. A student or two would be on their laptops, working away at a school project or watching YouTube videos.
In the back corner, away from everyone, sat two friends. One ranted to the other about a teacher she has disliked for a while now while the other sat and slowly nodded to her words, half listening, with a small orange and a pen marker in his hands. The upset girl realized this and waved a hand in front of the boy's face.
"Matt!" she said, dragging out her friend's name. His gaze shifted to the small orange and marker in his hands. "What are you doing?"
Matt sighed, uncapping the black marker. "Finally going to do the thing."
"The thing?"
"The thing, Toby." Matt flicked his eyes up to look at her then back to his orange, putting the tip of the marker to the orange's skin. "I'm going to officially ask Jay to be my prom date."
Her eyes widened and her mouth opened slightly from shock or surprise, Matt doesn't know. "What?! Oh, don't do it without telling me! I want to record it!"
"I don't know what's more of a piece of work, you or this orange."
Toby clicked her tongue, shaking her head. "Now that's just rude."
Matt chuckled and brought the marker away from the orange. He thoughtfully hummed. "Prom?" was written in a bold print form with a few lines decorating the top edges. "I fucked up."
"How so?"
He gestured with his marker, an irritated look on his face. "I could've put a heart in for the letter 'o' or some other shape."
"You could put a smiley face on there," Toby suggested. So Matt did just that, adding a little face in the letter 'o.' "Don't you have another orange to use anyways?"
"I do but I'd rather have my first orange work in my favor!" Matt huffed. He did his best to fix up his mistakes. Once done, he brought the orange back to see his work better. "I suppose this'll work."
The bell rang and every student in the classroom got up to head to the cafeteria. The hallways easily became crowded with students with teachers here and there in the midst of them all. Laughter, bickers and comments alike mingled in together and merged with the crowd's in the cafeteria as well.
In the far corner was the blue round table Matt and his group of friends meet up at during lunch. Backpacks were placed on the ground or on the round seats. As Matt and Toby got closer, Matt could see Jay walking up to the table with a Styrofoam tray filled with food in his hands.
Ah shit, oh fuck. Fuck. Me.
Matt looked himself over, checking to see if he looked okay. He saw a pair of black converse, the baggiest sweatpants he probably owned and to top it all off, a baggy shirt to bring it all together. Compared to other promposals he's seen and heard about, he could've been more presentable but this'll have to do for now. He took a deep breath, his thoughts running wild. A single word running through his mind, "fuck."
He felt a nudge on his side and looked over to see Toby giving a knowing smile. "You gonna do it or what?"
"Yeah just... shit."
"It'll be fine. It's cute! If I got a promposal like yours, I'd keep the orange peel," Toby said, giving Matt a comforting smile. "He'll like it, I know he will!"
They arrived at the table alongside with the rest of their friends who also had the same lunch hour. The two placed their bags on the ground and sat at the table. Matt pulled out the the orange, making sure the marker didn't smudge, and Toby pulled out her phone and gestured with her hand. "Are you doing it?"
Before Matt could answer, he couldn't help but burst out laughing as he saw Jay dabbed from across the table. "Jay just fucking dabbed!"
"Just do it!"
"Fine!"
"Hand it!"
"Shut it!"
Matt got up, his orange in hand and his face beating red. He walked around the table towards Jay. Their friends looked on with confusion.
Cameron asked, "What's going on?"
Matt stopped in front of Jay and extended his arm out, showing him the orange. Jay looked taken back, a blush painted on his face as he slowly reached out to grab the orange and awed at his gesture.
"This is adorable, thank you," Jay said, looking at the orange in his hands with a smile on his face and the corners of his eyes crinkling.
"It's not even a whole orange though, it's the small ones" Swagger said, pointing out the obvious.
"Yeah, it's a cutie orange," Matt replied as he tried to calm down his raging blush. At that point, everyone "oohed" and looked over at Jay, chuckling at the wording.
"Oh fuck," Jay laughed, his blush redder than before as he realized the pun behind the cutie orange in his hand.
With a snap of his fingers to give some more flare, Matt asked with an awkward smile. "Orange you glad I asked you out?"
Jay grinned, a chuckle escaped and he replied. "Yeah, very much so."
My buddy and I already knew we were going together for prom but I had two cutie oranges on me, I wanted to mess around and did "the thing" so now it's official, I asked her out to prom! Here's my Snapchat pic of the orange haha, I scribbled out our names though :D
