Matt stepped into the school, warm air washed over his numb face. It almost hurt with the temperatures change on his skin. Two long tables were off to the side with people collecting prom tickets bought in advance and a small room where coats, purses, shoes and other personal belongings were kept safe. A couple feet away from the ticket tables was a staircase that led upstairs, another staircase to his right that led downstairs and double doors wide open in front of him that led to the gym. Judging from the flashing lights in the dark, sparkly star balloons gently waving in the air and the loud music booming, he'll assume the actual prom was happening there.
People walked in and out of the gym, to and fro from the staircases. Familiar faces appeared and disappeared while a few friends greeted Matt at the door. He moved to the side, realizing he's in the way of everyone's path, and leaned against the red railings next to the double doors. He took this time to check himself over.
Black loafers shone with a bit of highlighted cleanliness, black trousers ironed a couple hours before along with his navy blue dress shirt decorated of a gold print of floral leaves that started at his shoulders and became smaller as it ran down his shirt. The gold print on his shirt shimmered, the floral leaves moving along with Matt.
A loud cheer erupted from the gym. Matt took a deep breath in—tugging his navy blue cuff back to fiddle with his beaded leather bracelet—and exhaled, running his index finger over his name indented into the leather. His mouth twitched into a small smile as he felt the grooves of the letters. He'd be damned if he ever lost such a precious valuable as the one adorning his wrist.
Looking around, taking in his surroundings, Matt wondered if he should roam around to find a couple of friends to hang out with but didn't need to as a different but familiar face appeared. He perked his head up the slightest bit when Jay walked through the double doors and oh shit. Holy... Woah. Woah...
Jay wore similar shoes that Matt wore, black trousers, a black dress shirt with red flower petal prints, his red cuffs neatly folded at his wrists and to finish his outfit off, a red bow tie. To say he looked good was a huge understatement. He's beautiful, stunning, just... absolutely breathtaking.
Jay looked over, his face brightened with a smile and gave a quick wave as he walked over. "Matt! You finally made it!"
"That I did." Matt thumbed his cuff back into place, fixing it to have his bracelet peek out from under his sleeve. "I didn't miss much, did I?"
Jay shook his head. "The grind circle died down a while back but it's still going. Other than that, not much really. Before I forget, the snacks and drinks are upstairs and the restrooms is downstairs." He pointed to the destinations as he explained.
Matt nodded his head, mentally taking notes of what Jay had told him. He looked towards the ground and stuffed his hands into his pockets, a low hum vibrated in his throat only he could hear.
Jay coughed, clearing his throat. Matt looked back up to see him pointing towards the gym. "Shall we?"
Matt shrugged, a smile tugging at his lips. "Sure."
Before they started walking through the doors, Jay held his hand out. He smiled like before but his eyebrows were slightly furrowed. Matt didn't think much on it as he smiled back, gently laced his fingers with Jay's and pressed their palms together.
Matt relaxed his shoulders, easing himself down to focus on the soft hand in his grip. Jay's hand didn't feel overwhelmingly warm. Instead, pretty chill—it almost reminded Matt of autumn—but Matt found that Jay's hand warmed up his own much sooner than he expected.
The two walked down a small path, passed the star balloons gently waving and sparkled in the dim light, and towards the big tarp that divided the gym in half. People walked through the long streamers, a waterfall of shimmering light that moved each time it became disturbed, hanging down from the ceiling that covered the opening to the other side of the gym.
