"We're here btw" was what the message on Toby's phone read as she shoved her other shoe on. With one hand on the doorknob and the other on her phone, she typed back to confirm she saw the message.
Out of the house, the night was dark and the streetlight made shadows from across the street. She saw a red truck with tinted windows—the back windows even more so—and could see Mason and Eric in the front. Toby gave a quick wave and when she opened the door, she was greeted with a scream and questionable use of words.
Inside the truck, Mason sat in the driver's seat arguing with Eric about the truck's lights—flipping it on and off. Matt sat at the other window side, giving a short wave to greet Toby, and Jay was in the middle between Matt and Toby who gave a smile. A red Hawaiian lei necklace hung from the front car mirror, the red fabric making up the fake flowers contrasted heavily against the black and gray interior. Between Toby's feet laid a small, worn and dirty beach ball.
"Hey Toby, you should sign a lease waiver while you're at it," Matt said, leaning forward to see Toby easier and gesturing with his hand. "We almost crashed when turning the corner to your street because someone here doesn't know how to properly drive!"
Mason turned around, pointing a finger to Matt's face. "Fuck you! We're still alive so that's a win!"
"What'll be a win for us is that we get a move on and go watch the damn movie!"
Mason huffed but started to back out of the driveway after blasting some music. A few curse words were thrown around when Mason made a sharp turn around the corner and basically drove past the stop sign.
On a particularly long turn, Toby felt herself leaning into Jay and whipped back when the road straightened out. She muttered, "We're gonna die."
"Nah," Mason shook his head with a smile, drawing out the syllable. "We're all good!"
Not long after that, Mason pulled into a big parking lot with cars parked near the buildings and Eric piped up with, "We should do donuts in the parking lot."
"If we're doing them, we should do them where no one can see us," Toby glanced over to Eric.
"No, we should do them where everyone can see us."
"Last time I did donuts in this truck, I almost tipped it over," Mason drove towards the other parked cars. "I'm not doing that again." He whipped the car into a sharp U-turn and made a hard stop, parking the car and shutting it off. "Now we gotta wait for about twenty minutes."
"Um... you parked it in two spots."
Mason looked out of the window. "No I didn't."
"Yeah you did, I can see it."
"It's not that bad."
Eric made a noise in the back of his throat as Mason perked up as though to remember something, an excited "Oh!" leaving his mouth. He opened the armrest console and stuck his hand in there; the sounds of papers and wrappers crumpling against each other as he scrambled to find whatever it was. A small noise of triumph was made as he held out his hands.
In his hands was something small, cylinder shaped and wrapped in plastic covering a creamy colored chunk. On the plastic was red lettering that read, "de la Rosa" with a red rose below it.
"They're so good, oh my gosh! I found a few packages of them on the floor in Walmart," Mason leaned back and brought his legs up, resting them against Jay's, sitting backwards in his seat. "Be careful, they're pretty crumbly."
"Fucking hell, I had like seven of them," Eric leaned back in his seat.
"Same."
"What does it taste like?" Toby asked, turning the foreign candy around in her hands.
"It's different but simply tastes like peanuts," Jay said, unwrapping and eating his candy.
Taking a bite, Toby found that Mason and Jay were right. It had a peanut taste to it and crumbled at her fingertips, the powder clumping easily in her mouth and made it somewhat hard to eat.
"Oh hey, I think I see Cameron over there," Matt said, seeing a figure started walking towards the truck. He rolled down the window halfway only to see an old man stop and look back at him. There was a pause on both ends until the man continued walking as Matt rolled up the window, still looking out the window. He turned around, inhaling a sharp breath to hold in whatever dignity he had left and everyone bursted out laughing.
"Oh-ho shit!"
"That's awkward."
"Jesus Christ!"
"There's Ryan!" Mason pointed out as a car pulled up next to them. He got out of the car and yelled, "Get the fuck out of my car!"
"Yeah yeah, we're getting out!"
Toby shoved the rest of the "de la Rosa" candy into her mouth and almost tripped when getting out of the car. Mason and Jay had started small talk with Ryan so Toby decided to console Matt on his awkward encounter but not without a few chuckles escaping.
"Fuck, that's so awkward," Matt looked at the night sky. He looked back at Toby, "That's the worst possible thing that could've happened."
"It's fine though, it happens," Toby patted Matt's shoulder. "Look, there's the real Cameron!"
A tall boy walked over, hands in his jacket pockets while he strolled on over with a smile on his face. He started chuckling but ended up laughing anyways. "I saw what happened."
"Fuck," Matt drew out the syllable as Toby and Cameron laughed. He shook his head and waved everyone over, walking away towards the movie theater. "C'mon, let's get our seats to watch Captain Marvel. "
"Hell yeah, Captain Marvel! Woo!"
****
"She'll eat Thanos' ass."
"I hate you so much."
Ah, that's quite the abrupt ending and this oneshot is messy but I went to the movie theater yesterday to watch Captain Marvel with a few friends and I had fun! I give it 8/10; good graphics and progressive plot line with a natural flow up until the ending, it went by quickly but the movie was two hours long so I'm not gonna dwell on it. Hope you have a good day/night!
