"What do you mean it's been eight days?" Jisung asks as calmly as possible despite the fact his breathing has heightened and a queasy feeling overtakes him.
"He's probably just finishing up his paperwork to allow him a human form on Earth. Taeyong's decision was extremely short notice, and the departments that deal with that stuff hate dealing with such issues so hastily," Mark attempts to lighten the situation despite Jisung's clearly anxious nature, "You'll come to know how each faction works after a few years of being an angel."
Jisung frowns deeply and adverts his eyes from the small crowd.
"How did you-"
"Taeyong told us he was intending to make you my guardian angel," Jeno speaks up.
"I...I didn't know that..." Jisung mumbles.
"You...did take the offer...right?" Jeno asks, but Jisung remains silent.
"I just realized Donghyuck and I need to go make a trip to Jaemin's house to make sure his aunt is still stable," Mark announces as he grabs Donghyuck by the collar of his t-shirt and yanks him out of the study.
"I should go with them," Jaemin utters softly, pressing a gentle kiss to Jeno's cheek and hurriedly pacing after the other two.
The door shuts behind Jeno, leaving just the two now in the dark study.
"Did you not take Taeyong's offer to become an angel?" Jeno repeats himself yet again.
"No," Jisung grunts, "I couldn't, okay?"
Jeno's jaw drops at his answer. He stares disbelievingly at the tall boy, unable to believe his ears.
"Why? Isn't being an angel and getting to be with Chenle all you've ever wanted?" Jeno questions incredulously.
"Yes, but-"
"Then why turn down the offer to get exactly that? It was right in front of you!" Jeno snaps as he throws his arms in the air.
"Because I can't forgive myself!" Jisung bellows, "I cant forgive myself for what happened to Chenle! I can't let it go, so I can't bring myself to become an angel!"
"You're an idiot. Truly," Jeno responds without so much as skipping a beat, "So, what, now I have to navigate this angel thing on my own? Congrats, Jisung. Your one job was to watch over me and you fucked it."
"You're an angel now?" Jisung spats back.
"Yeah. It turns out my mother was supposed to be one until I killed her and my father sent her soul to purgatory. I've apparently been half and half all along," Jeno responds bitterly.
"And how's that working out for you?" Jisung asks with a condescending tone.
"Just fine, no thanks to you," Jeno hisses.
"Oh really?"
"Yes, really."
"Then why are your eyes glowing red?" Jisung barks at the boy with his hair still white as snow.
"They are not!" Jeno bellows as his eyes abruptly change from their normal, deep brown shade to a bright ruby red. Jisung smirks knowingly at this change, and Jeno growls angrily. "Leave me alone, Jisung. I'm trying my fucking hardest here."
"Are you?" Jisung questions, "All you've known is death, destruction, and manipulation. What makes you think you can just change on the drop of a dime?"
"Because I love Jaemin, and I would do anything for him! I'd do anything to be with him!" Jeno exclaims.
"That's not love, that's setting yourself up for failure!" Jisung argues.
"So because I've always been a demon, I have to stay that way? Fuck that. Being a demon caused me to murder Jaemin," Jeno mutters in a lower register, "Just because you're too afraid to-"
"Wait, what?" Jisung blurts out, "I thought he was still alive."
"Yeah, he is. Because I chose to embrace my angel half to save him. I almost lost him forever to my father because of who I was," Jeno remarks, "I thought you of all people would be happy for me...I guess I was wrong."
Not wanting to hear another word out of Jisung's mouth, Jeno storms out of the study, slamming the door shut with a loud bang behind him.
