The next morning I got up for school and took a shower. When I went to my room to get dressed I thought I would wear the sweater I got from the two unknown “friends” of mine. But after comparing that one and the one I “stole”, they were practically the same. The letter color and the size were different. I decided to wear Tobias’ so maybe he would notice and say something about it to me and I could give it back to him.
I packed my non-Lancaster sweater in my bookbag incase he asked for his sweater, said goodbye to the parentals, and walked out the door. I drove over into Nathan’s driveway and honked my horn, when he got in he spoke with a settle tone, sort of like he was sad. But, it was Monday, so totally expected.
“Good morning.” Nathan said.
“Good morning Sunshine.” I smiled and rubbed the top of his head, and he immediately fixed his hair back without looking back at me.
While I backed out, he turned on the music and it was silent for he rest of the ride. It’s been a little awkward between me and Nathan the past few rides to school. I don’t know why, but I don’t like it.
When we got to school, it was a usual Monday.
I was hoping at lunch he would notice the sweater, but out of the times I looked at him he wasn’t looking. I didn’t look very much, though. I didn’t want to make it obvious. Trixie didn’t talk very much, she was acting like Nathan.
“Are you guys okay?” I laughed, looking at Trix and then Nathan.
“Yeah, just, tired.” Nathan said trying to smile.
“No. Me and Tobias fought this morning and we never do. I’m scared that he hates me or something. I don’t know what to do,” She started to tear up, “I don’t like to be hated and to argue, especially with my brother.” Tears started to fall.
“Oh my gosh, Trixie. What happened?” I said, putting my arm around her.
“I already told you, me and tobias fought.” She was bawling.
“I’m so sorry. It’s gonna be okay, Trix. I promise.”
Nathan was just staring at me, I was tearing up too.
I looked over at Tobias who was looking back. He looked pissed. I was pissed at him. She stopped crying before we left to go to class.
When it was time to leave school, me and nathan walked to the car together in silence. When we got in the car and drove out the parking lot, it was silent for a while, we hadn’t even turned on the radio, but Nathan finally broke it.
“Sage.” He said, looking out the front windshield.
“Yeah?” I said, doing the same.
“I got something to say, and I’ve wanted to for a while now.”
“Go ahead. You can tell me anything.”
It was silent for a while, “I don’t really know how to say it.” He said looking down. We reached a stoplight.
“Just say it the best you can.” I glanced over with a smile.
“Okay,” He stopped, like he was thinking, “The best way I could say it, even though it doesn’t even reach the level of how I really feel,” He stopped again with a sigh.
“Go ahead, I’ll understand.” The light turned green.
He was quiet for a minute. “I-I love you, Elizabeth Watson.” He said looking up through the windshield again.
“I love you too, Nathan Woods.” I laughed.
“No really, I love you. Like that.” He looked over at me.
I pulled over the car and turned it off while trying to gather my thoughts, “What?” I looked at him.
“I love you.”
“I heard that. What’s making you say this?”
“I’m tired of keeping it inside,” He said putting his hand on his heart.
“You said that ‘I love you’ didn’t even reach how you felt? What do you mean?” I was confused, I had never been in a situation like this before.
“What I mean is you’re, like, the most amazing girl ever. I can’t even describe how amazing. There’s over 100,000 words in the english dictionary and none of them are amazing enough to even begin to describe you.”
I was scared to share my own feelings. He was the brother I had always wanted, I don’t want to ruin the relationship we have. I just cranked the car back and started to drive home. I didn’t want to hurt him.
He looked at me all the way home, It made me unexplainably uncomfortable. I began to tear up. When we got to my house I asked him if he wanted to hangout at my house, and he rejected. He got out of my car, slammed the door, and walked over to his house.
I began to cry uncontrollably, I loved Nathan. I just couldn’t lose my brother. I then heard a knock on my window.
