"Are you actually freaking kidding me!" Owen yells, showing an emotion between 'THAT'S FREAKING AWESOME' and 'I'M F-ING DEAD '. "There's no way this is happening right now."

"It's happening."

"You can't be serious!"

"We're serious."

Owen hits his head against the wall. "I can't believe this. You know, it almost doesn't seem physically possible. But now... I gotta tell-"

"No, Owen!" Bryne snaps. "You can't tell anyone else about this! We don't want to cause a panic. So keep quiet about this, okay?"

Owen nods.

"And also, do you know where Sam is?" I ask. "We were also going to tell her, but I didn't see her on the bus this morning. Sometimes her parents drive her, and that was what I thought, and I texted her, but she hasn't written back yet."

"Actually... I haven't seen Sam at all this weekend," says Owen. "And usually she and my boyfriend- I mean, friend- Tyler come over to play Minecraft on Saturdays. But neither of them showed up. I was kinda worried. At first, I thought they might be sick, but now..." He gulped. "I'm starting to think he mighta kidnapped them, considering he's in the real world."

I shake my head. "Nah. He never captures anyone. Everyone that he wants dead, he'll just kill on sight. Unless it's me, then he'll capture me. But for most other people, he just kills 'em dead the minute he sees 'em."

"Tommy, shut up!" Bryne says through clenched teeth. "You're gonna scare him."

"Oh- sorry, Owen," I say. "I hope I didn't scare you."

"Boy, I've watched Bird Box like fifty times. I don't get scared by anything."

Bryne laughs.

Suddenly, my phone rings. I take it out of my coat pocket and put it up to my ear. "Hello. Tommy Feynman here. Wassup?"

There's no answer.

"Um, hello?!" I say.

"Who's that?" Bryne asks.

"I dunno. Someone with the audacity to call me and then not answer. Is this one of those prank calls?!" I roll my eyes. "Hey, if you're about to ask me if my refrigerator is running, then I suggest you get off this call before I call the cops."

Nothing. A weird noise comes on this time, like static.

"Wha..." Owen says, clearly confused.

"Testing," someone's voice says. "Testing, testing. One two three. Is this thing on? Can you hear me? Ugh, whatever. This world's technology is so weird. Back in my world, we walk to talk to people. We're not lazy little shits who are too dumb to stand up and walk to their friend's house. We don't have these weird brick things that you can talk to."

Bryne's jaw drops. She can recognize the voice, and so can I. And also- who the heck else would not know how to use a phone at this age? It's 2019, people. Try to get with the program.

"Okay, look. Gameknight999, are you there?"

"Who's-" Owen starts, but Bryne says, "it's Tommy's Minecraft username. And the person on the phone- that's Herobrine."

"What do you want?" I say, trying to keep my voice from quivering. Herobrine's talking to me through an iPhone X. What the heck?

"I got something to say to you. Well, I'm assuming you know already how your father miserably failed to destroy me?"

"Not good," I say truthfully.

"Ah, thought so. By the way, speaking of me getting into this dimension... this world is so weird. I can't even break stuff with my hands anymore. I tried destroying this giant green lady statue with my hand, and the only thing I actually broke was my hand. But the good thing is, I kept my immortal powers, so it healed after a little while."

"Herobrine, go back to Minecraft!" Bryne shouts into the phone.

"Oh! Is GalaxyGamer71 here as well? What a pleasant surprise. Oh, and by the way, I've been thinking, and I think I finally know how to make the physical world suffer just as much as those servers made me suffer. And I'm not telling you what I'm gonna do. Take that."

I roll my eyes. Once an arrogant idiot, always an arrogant idiot.

"Well, that being said, I guess I'll see you soon. Bye! Wait, Gameknight999, can you tell me how to hang up?"

"You're a virus," I snap. "You can figure it out yourself."

"Fine. God, you're such a jerk. Okay... um, how about this? No, that's the camera- ew, it's on selfie! I look horrible. Ah, here we go! Is it the little red button with the odd-looking smile on it?"

"Yes, it is," Bryne says to him, trying not to laugh.

I shoot her a look.

"I'm tryna be nice!"

Herobrine hangs up the phone and then texts me- tell Galaxy that i said thank you for helping me hang up. also, i hate you and wanna kill you. bye love you <3 :P >:)

Owen is hitting his head against the wall again, but this time he's laughing. "Oh, my GOD!" he snorts. "That might have been the funniest thing I've ever seen in my entire life."

"Same!" says Bryne. She takes out her phone. "Oh, I got a voicemail."

"Don't!" I say panickedly. "It could be Herobrine again!"

"Dude, chill. It's just from your dad." Bryne hits the play button.

"Hey, Bryne. It's Tommy's dad. I just want you to know that Jenny has gone missing. I don't know where she is. Don't worry about it, the police are over and they're looking all over our neighborhood for her. Stay safe and have a great day at school. And tell Tommy to try not to think about Herobrine too much. We can deal with that later. I love you guys!"

No. No, no, no. Jenny's gone missing? How? I just saw her go into the fourth-grade hallway! How could she have gone missing in the last four minutes?!

I lean back against the wall, hyperventilating. "This is definitely not good," I say. "Tyler, Sam, and Jenny? All in the same day? And they're all people I know and are good friends of mine. This is too much of a coincidence. I... I don't know what to do."

"We have to fix this, that's what we need to do!" says Owen. "I think- no, scratch that, I know- that Herobrine must have kidnapped them all. If we don't do something soon, then they're all going to end up-"

"Owen, no!" Bryne hisses, pointing at me.

"Something really bad could happen to them," Owen says hastily, trying to cover up the fact that he very obviously was about to say 'they're all going to end up dead.'

"Hey!" shouts my writing teacher, Ms. Haughton. "What's going on with you three? Get to class, you're late!"

Bryne rolls her eyes. "What class does everyone have?"

"Science," says Owen.

"Math," I say.

"I have math, too," Bryne says. She takes my hand; I feel butterflies rise up in my stomach. "See you later, Owen. Come on, let's get to class."

Together, Bryne and I walk down to class, both of us still scared of what could happen to our friends... to us.
