the front desk was my worst nightmare. I didn't even know why I agreed to take that part time job. it wasn't like any other karaoke club. it was more like a whore house and I had to see a whole load of shit just by greeting customers.
"excuse me?"
I looked up from my phone and was met by a beautiful girl, probably around my age, dressed so elegantly. when I first started working here, I was shocked to see how many young girls come here to sin, but soon I got used to it. and so, seeing her was no surprise to me.
"yes? how can I help you?"
"um, is there-"
"sorry all the rooms are taken" I cut in.
"no, no, that's not it," she said, flashing me a full smile. "i wanted to know if there's any payphone in this area."
who even uses payphones nowadays?
"uh...i don't know, but here, you can use mine."
I handed her my phone and all I got in return was a slight bow and a forced smile. she dialled in a number and walked away from the counter.
as beautiful and kind as she looked, something felt strange about her. and in all honestly, I couldn't care less. at that moment, I was too busy focused on the clock infront of me, waiting for the hand to rest on 12. I wanted to go home and sleep for as long as I could. how amazing would it be to lay down in bed for the next two days?
after a minute or two, the girl snapped me back from my trail of thoughts and handed me my phone. there were tears welled up in her eyes and she barely managed to choke out a 'thank you' before running out through the front door.
had I known what was in it for me, I wouldn't have given her my phone.
