Malissa walked down the street and back. She needed to clear her head. She needed to get Johnny off of her mind. But that was impossible. Johnny was her brother, and if there's something bothering him it gets to her too. Malissa just wanted to know what was wrong. She wanted to help him. He already goes through so much, he doesn't need anymore pain.
She sighed, the stress was getting to her. She just wanted to help. Maybe Ponyboy will help him, she thought. Maybe that's why Johnny wanted to talk to him. I just need to give him time.
As she got back to the Curtis house she sat on the porch steps. Johnny came out the door and walked right by her.
"Where are you going?"
Johnny only shrugged. "The lot. Maybe a walk."
Malissa stood up quickly. "Do you want me to come with you?"
Johnny thought about this for a moment. He didn't really want to talk to his sister right now. He needed time to think. "Nah, I'll be fine," That was all he said before he turned on his heels and started walking down the street.
Johnny has learned how to hide his emotions. When your a greaser you have to. It's either that or you're an easy target.
Johnny walked to the lot and sat down on the old car seat. "What am I going to do?" He mumbled. "What am I going to do?"
"Johnny?" Malissa's voice broke his thoughts. She had followed him even though he told her not to.
Johnny looked away and scowled. He wasn't mad at her, not at the moment. He was just aggravated that she had followed him.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
"Nothing. I'm just still a little shaken up from my dream the other night." This wasn't an entire lie either. The dream made him this way. It made him mad. It made him snap at his sister the other night.
Malissa only nodded and sat down beside him. She laid her head on his shoulder. "Just remember I'm here for you, Johnny. Whenever you need me, I'm here."
"I know. I just don't want to talk about." Johnny could tell that she was worried about him and that her feelings were probably hurt from last night, so he added, "I'm sorry if I'm hurting your feelings."
"It's fine. I guess you just sort of scared me a little last night when you, ya know..." She didn't like bringing it up either. She didn't want to upset him any more than he already was.
"Mhm. I'm sorry. I love you, sis." At that moment Johnny was happy. He wasn't mad. Wasn't aggravated. He was happy he was spending time with his sister. And even though he didn't tell her the truth, when he apologized, it lifted a weight off his shoulders.
Malissa smiled. "I love you too, Johnny."
