Please Wake Up

"What?" I asked. They all looked away.

"What do you mean she's gone?!" I demanded. The panic rising in my chest.

She's gone?

What do they mean gone?

Did she just disappear?

Is she dead?

"Felix, we tried to wake her up, I'm sorry," cry was crying. So were Charlie and Tuesday into his shoulder.

"No," I said shakily but the small body lay against the wall. A sheet covering her.

I walked over and gently pulled it back.

Her little round face was pale and still.

I gently brushed a curl off her face before pulling the sheet back up.

I heard everyone leave.

I spent some time in that room.

Charlie eventually came to talk to me. He still looked wrought with emotion.

"Hey Felix, look I know you're mourning. Believe me, we are too. But we have to leave. Ken and Karen don't have as much food as they are letting on. Focus on getting to Texas now. Finding a cure for Tayla," he said.

I've fucked everything up.

I should have left that little girl at the centre. How did she die?

I have no idea.

I let kids die.

I don't want to let these ones die.

"Charlie. Go back to Nevada. Texas is too dangerous. Please," I said.

"No, Felix. Were a team now. It's not your fault," he said.

"I don't want to be responsible of any more children's deaths," I said blankly.

"I'm not a child. We can handle ourselves. Remember it was you who found us surviving. I was the one who made you drop your weapons. I was the one who showed you where to go. Helped you get there. We provided you with shelter. We helped you. We have been the ones taking charge Felix. You need to wake up and take some responsibility," he said and walked out.

I never thought of it that way.

I really need to get my shit together.

"Do you have a shovel?" I asked Karen.

"Um. Yeah I think ken has one in the garage," she wasn't a bitch for once.

I went and grabbed it and ignored the threat of zombies as I went outside and dug.

They watched from the window. I could feel them.

Two hours later Sally came and sat beside me with a gun.

"Don't worry. This isn't for me," I said. "I don't need to be babysat," I added.

"I'm not here to babysit you. I'm here to kill zombies that want to kill you," she said.

"You're into killing?" I stated more than asked.

"Only the bastards that killed Ellen," she said and I felt nervous about her rolling the shotgun in her hands. "She didn't get a grave. She got three bullets in the skull," she said.

"I'm sorry about El-" I started.

"No. You don't have the right to be sorry. You weren't responsible. Those bastards are responsible," she loaded the gun. "And they are going to pay."
