CHAPTER 17
When my vision cleared, the first thing I did was contact Max. ‘Max. Is Allison alright? You have to come back immediately. I’ll explain when you get back. Just get back home. Right now.’ He replied instantly ‘What’s up? We’re on our way. Do you want me to teleport us?’ ‘Yeah. Teleport yourself but make sure no one see’s you. Send Allison first and then teleport yourself. You might kill yourself trying and trust me dying is not a feeling I’d recommend to most people.’ I cautioned. ‘I always wanted to do that’ He replied.
He must have taken some time to find an empty ally in a crowded city like New York. It took a few minutes during which I walked around the room muttering how I was a horrible friend for dragging her into all this. After what felt like eternity the shadows rippled in front of us and a figure materialized but for some reason it couldn’t jump here fully.
Suddenly with panic I felt Allison’s pulse threading. I looked at my mom not knowing what to do. She thought for a moment before realising the obvious. The protective charms around the house stopped anyone from jumping into the house. Mom muttered something and Allison appeared fully and collapsed. She would have fallen to the ground and hit her head if I hadn’t sent a bean bag across the room to catch her.
As she was recovering Max appeared in the room and mom quickly replaced the wards around the house. I got them both some food and a bar of chocolate for Max to help replenish his energy. Not all of it but some. When they were both fine Max looked at me and asked “What the hell was that about? We were like ten blocks away when you called. Wait, is it still 'called' if a cell phone is not being used? But anyway what’s up?”
I told them about the vision and said “Allison it’s better if you go home. I’m sorry I dragged you into this and I don’t want you getting hurt. Just don’t tell anyone that I’m a magician.” Allison was quite for a count of 10 and when she spoke she sounded sick. “Are you sure that the person you saw was me? And are you sure that I was getting kidnapped? Because the vision that you saw at the airport happened in your house so how do you know that I will be shut in a dungeon? I mean it could be Mrs. Gardiner punishing me because I didn’t like the stew.”
I didn’t even smile because I desperately wanted to make her see sense. “but...” “No buts. I’m staying.” She interrupted me speaking with a sense of finality and I knew that she had made a decision and only an impending apocalypse would stop her from adhering to it.
But I had to try harder. “Allison my surrogate parents died because of me. I could have prevented it, If only I had stopped to think what would have happened if it was all real. I didn’t even stop to consider the fact that if what I saw was real and not some stupid dream than my parents were going to die. I know you’ll say that it wasn’t my fault, that I couldn’t have known but I say that I should have known. I should have trusted my instincts and told them to stay. That I should have convinced them somehow. I couldn’t live with the guilt that my parents had died because of me. You of all the people should know that since it was you who stopped me from doing anything incredibly stupid.”
“If anything happened to you I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. Live with the guilt that for the second time someone’s life was placed in my hands and I let them die. It would kill me Allison. You know that. So if you care about me at all, you will get on the next flight to London. I won’t be able to live with the fact that something happened to you just because you have a best friend who can read minds and see the future.” I said, desperately trying to get her to see sense. I was so caught up in trying to get her to stay that I didn’t notice that I had said parents instead of surrogate parents. Even though it had slipped my notice, it hadn’t my mom’s. She looked at the floor, sadly.
