Hare darts under hedge
Kite dives ripping sky silent
Flight from eye to eye
I walked with a friend behind her house, talking and looking for blackberries, when we saw a hare run under a hedge towards a sheepdog. Kites were circling, very high, like specks. We rounded the corner, and silently, a kite carved flight between two trees at my eye's height. He seemed suspended in the air, parallel to me, rocketing upwards to go over the house, but for that very long split second, he and I were suspended, literally yellow eye to green one. Pity that hare.
Author Note
The inspiring photographic work of Christine Pitt on The Beautiful Red Kite video which she put to 'Drifting'by Enya from the album 'Amarantine' which I saw on youtube has reminded me of the magnificence of this creature, and helped me believe that my memory of the encounter, and the look in the kite's eye, was real. Red Kite in Flight by Duncan Toms shows a very reminiscent scene.
