Mom's waiting for me at the kitchen table when I get back from school so I guess she hasn't forgotten about yesterday evening.
I put my bag down and sit down on the other side of the table. "Mom I know I was home way too late yesterday but I promise it won't happen again." My mom looks at me, a little confused. "I know you where home way too late yesterday but that's not what I wanted to talk to you about." I raise my eyebrows at her, she usually already makes a big deal out of me being 15 minutes late, yesterday I was two hours late and she doesn't even want to discuss it with me?
"Elynn, Hailey's parents are getting a divorce." My mouth drops open. "What?! Hailey didn't even tell me yet." Hailey always tells me everything, why wouldn't she tell me this. "Pam (Hailey's' mom) called me yesterday to tell me, Hailey was probably even more shocked than you are right now. We all didn't really see this coming and Hailey hasn't spoken to Pam since she told her." For a couple of minutes I don't even know what to say.
When my parents told us they were getting a divorce it didn't really come as a surprise. They were always fighting and Noah and I just knew they wouldn't stay together. We were actually a little relieved when they decided to split up. I mean divorces are never fun for anyone, but after a while things got better.
Not at first though, my mom and dad decided they wanted to get a divorce together but I guess my mom didn't expect things to be so lonely without my father. She was pretty sad the first 6 months after their break up. Then she suddenly decided she had to do something about it. After her 3 month independency course for divorced women she was doing way better. Now she's happy again so that's great, the only thing is she can't stop talking about everything she learned there and she kinda swore off men so yea.
I think my dad is doing fine, I don't see him that often because he lives in Boston now. He has a girlfriend for about a year now, Sacha, she's nice. I don't know her that well because I've only seen her a couple times yet but she's cool. She doesn't try to be like our mom or something, she's just nice I guess.
The first year after the divorce my dad came to visit us way more often than now, because he still lived in Los Angeles. Then he met Sacha and he moved in with her, in Boston. Now he doesn't visit us a lot anymore. We do visit him now, not so much because well Boston is literally on the other side of the country, but we do visit him. We sometimes go there during our spring break. Every other year Noah and I also go there for Christmas and we go their for weekends sometimes, but that's only for special occasions.
When my dad first told us he had a new girlfriend my mom was just starting to get happier. Noah and I were kinda scared she would go back to being lonely and sad because well my dad found someone new and she didn't, but she took it really well. I really think she's happy for my dad. They actually seem to get along better now than they did before they split up. They just act like old friends when they meet, which I guess they kind of are, but still.
I just really hope things will get better for Hailey's parents too, and for Hailey. Hailey! "Mom I've got to go see Hailey. Have you seen Pam already, she's probably not doing great either now that David's (Hailey's dad) leaving. When is he leaving anyway?" My mom slowly sips at her cup of coffee before she answers. "Elynn, David isn't leaving, Pam is." What?!
I was sad that my dad left but I wouldn't have known what to do if my mom did. "When, when is she leaving?" My mom puts her hand on mine "Honey, she already left yesterday evening." My mouth drops open again. I can't believe this. She left, Hailey's mom left, just like that. Well yeah that explains why Hailey hasn't spoken to here anymore.
"Where does she live now? She's still in Venice right?" My mom coughs. "She found an apartment, in Miami." Miami?! That's freaking far away. "How did she get an apartment in Miami so quick?" I can see that my mom doesn't really know how to answer me. "Elynn I don't really know what was going on with Pam and Dave but the apartment was already ready to move in. I guess they both already knew they weren't staying together for quite a while."
I nod, I don't really know what to say anymore. "I think you should go see Hailey. She'll probably enjoy your company over her dads right now." I laugh a little. Hailey's dad always wants to 'talk about it' when something's wrong. I don't even know anymore how many times I've heard him say 'So Hailey, tell me what's going on lately. Anything important I need to know about? School? Boys?'
I think it's funny he wants to know a little about Hailey's live but she just finds it annoying. She's always moaning about her dad asking her about boys and stuff. I kinda get it though, I find it funny know but I wouldn't really want to tell my dad everything about cute guys either and it's a little different for me because I have a boyfriend and my parents know him. But oh my was it awkward when my dad first met Jaimy.
I was only really together with Jaimy for like a month and my dad suddenly decided he was coming over for a surprise visit. Well it was definitely a surprise. My mom wasn't home, Noah was in his room upstairs and Jaimy and I were watching a movie downstairs. My dad walked in exactly when Jaimy and I were kissing so I surprised him as well because I hadn't told him I had a boyfriend yet. My dad had brought noodles so we sat in the kitchen together and ate them.
Thank god for Noah being there because otherwise it would've been even more awkward. Noah just talked to my dad about random stuff, like always, as if my dad didn't just meet my boyfriend he didn't even know I had for the first time. The next day my dad had asked me to bring Jaimy to lunch and I did, even though I didn't really want to. That actually went really well and now my dad and Jaimy get along pretty good.
When I introduced Jaimy to my mom everything went great the first time. After he left my mom told me she really liked him and she thought he was real cute.
My mom asks if I also want some coffee but I need to go see Hailey. I laugh again because I think my mom's right, she'll probably rather tell me how she's doing than her dad.
