Chapter 11

266 Days

21st October 2021

Today was the day. Today was the day I was going to be doing the utter most ridiculous thing I would ever do. Today we were going to break into Fort Detrick, one of the highest security buildings in the world, to steal the cure and if we got caught we all get thrown into prison or probably worst. No big deal.

"Go away!" I moaned pulling the covers over my head and trying to swat away the annoying pest that was trying to wake me up.

"Wake up love, we need to star preparing." Alex said trying to pry the covers away from me.

"You think you can get her out of bed like that?" I heard Lisa comment from the other side of the room. "There could be an apocalypse going on and she’ll sleep through it. This is how you get Natalie Taylor out of bed." She wouldn't. I thought sleepily, but I was proved wrong.

Several crashing footsteps sounded before a small but surprisingly heavy body was flung at me, followed by a splash of ice-cold water, which soaked through my sheets.

"What the hell Lisa! You promised you wouldn't do that anymore!" I spluttered, wiping the water from my face.

"Hey I might be dead tomorrow, I'm making the most of what time I have left." I slapped her across the face to shock her into silence, but not hard enough to actually hurt her. Lisa’s hand flew to her pink cheek, her mouth forming a big round 'O'. "What the hell was that for?" She screamed.

"First of all you deserved it, second of all it's pay back for all the times you've 'accidentally' walked in without knocking and third of all, for ever thinking I would let you die. Whether you like it or not you are going to live until you are old and wrinkly with Xavier moaning at you to make him dinner, a baby screaming at you every second of everyday and I will be at your side laughing the whole way through." I then got up and walked towards to bathroom leaving Lisa speechless for the first time in her life.

"Hey Blondie, you're finally wake." Xavier took one look at Lisa's shocked expression and bright red cheek and shook his head at me. "Oh sweetheart, hasn't anyone ever told you it's not polite to slap dying pregnant women?" I flipped him off and carried on to the bathroom. I do not appreciate being woken up against my will.

A few hours later we were all briefed on the plan that we had been preparing for the last few days, which was so unbelievably simple, I was having doubts if it's actually going to work. I spent a few hours, the day before pulling security camera footage from all over Fort Detrick and deciphering the pass codes for different doors in the building, with a program I had written myself. I absently chewed on my pen while I watched my computer identify codes by the finger placements on the keypads when people are accessing the doors; yes I know I am a genius.

“So what does it look like Blondie?” Xavier said leaning over my shoulder while I wrote down one of the codes.

“I think I have almost all the codes.” I hummed as I checked the blueprint for the doors we would need to open. “But we can open most of the doors with the ID cards and I put our names on the visitors list so they should be expecting us. As far as IT is concerned, we’re covered.” Xavier smirked and much to my annoyance ruffled my hair before turning to talk to Alex.

Xavier explained the location of the cure with the blueprint of the building also provided by me. “These are where the CCTV cameras are, we’re not going to be able to avoid all of them but at least try to keep your face away from them, once they realise who we actually are, it’s going to be difficult to stay hidden.”
